Only those who know the name of this place can pass and I don’t grant special privileges to heroes…”One of my favorite video games of all time is Rayman 2: The Great Escape and yet I barely draw any fanart for this game AND the last fanart I did for this game series is rather old. It does include both Jano and Rayman! But it's just...oh I can do so much better now.
I decided to fix that just a little bit today by drawing one of my favorite parts of that game; when Rayman has to deal with the rather surly Guardian of the Cave of Bad Dreams, who we learn in a later game’s instruction manual that he once fought Rayman as the First Bad Dream. So they actually have a bit of a history to them.
I imagine him playing Guardian is punishment from Polokus for trying to take over the Glade of Dreams and Jano is more than a little grouchy about the whole arrangement and THAT'S why he gave Rayman such a hard time. Maybe there's no hard feelings but I imagine there's just a tiny bit of bad blood between the two...

Odd, that he isn't appeared other games after Rayman 2 and GBA version of Rayman 3. He could be good boss in Rayman Origins.

If I'm not mistaken, Jano was according to the story the very first opponent Rayman ever had (before R 1), and that after the lost Jano became the guardian. It would be great if Ubisoft would ever consider doing a game about that story. Since Jano was the darkest part of R2, I'm sure a game like that would be pretty "spooky"!! You captured his style very well. Love your artwork. Keep it with your amazing work!

(This game - when we had to fight him and he ate Rayman alive I was NOT suspecting it - the Cave of Bad dreams made quite the impression on my as a kid!)

Jano is definitely one of the more memorable parts of that game. I actually thought he was one of the scariest moments in a G-rated N64 game (although Tomb of the Ancients I still think is scarier, and oh geez, that level haunts me), the way he warns you that he's going to race you, and the race is completely hopeless and he'll always catch up to you regardless of how fast you go.
Also, a friend pointed out that he said he'd race you. He didn't say he wouldn't cheat.
But yes, Jano is fun! Thank you!

It's so hard choosing an all-time favorite game, but Rayman 2 would definitely be on my list of games to take with me on a deserted island.
I would say "poor Jano", but he did try to take over the world and overrun it with nightmares so I guess this is a fitting punishment, for him to have to keep watch on the nightmares he created. He's probably a little unhappy about it, but hey, that's what nightmares get. Especially big, one-eyed nightmares that like to eat limbless heroes.

Yeah, he did kinda deserve it. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time! Though I wonder, we know Polokus made Jano from a bad dream, but where did the bad dream come from? What thoughts and fears caused the dream to emerge? It's all very mysterious and interesting. I actually write a crap ton of Rayman fan fiction because I find it so cool! And what better punishment than being stuck with your own monstrous creations for all time?
(And if Rayman's purpose was to get rid of him, why hasn't he done it yet? I hope we find out in the fourth game!)

Though by the way, how did you get that information from about them fighting? I have been playing the games for years and have never heard that. Where are your sources?

It mentions that Rayman was created to fight the First Bad Dream, and the nymphs being startled during his creation is why he lacks limbs, and when you get to the Darktoons, it gives a name to the First Bad Dream: Jano.
So yes, Rayman and Jano fought, but like Ales Mansay's backstory, you don't actually see it in a video game but it's all hidden away in the backstories. But the Jano thing is more or less canon.

Ah, that explains a lot on why I didn't know about it. I never played origin because I didn't like the art style, nor the fact an old 3d game turned into a 2d "runner mode".so technically I never counted it as canon either. Maybe more the lore now because of you.

Aww, I loved both Origins and Legends. They're some of the best 2D platformers I've played and they're a fun improvement on the Rayman 1 gameplay. Plus Michel Ancel had a hand (Hah) in both games so I consider them canon.
...but then again, the Rabbids games are considered canon and one Rabbids GBA game has elements of the cancelled Rayman 4 in it so y'know, take the Rayman canon with a grain of salt....
