Skylanders Fandom, I apologize dearly for the nonsense I’m about to unleash.

Regent Lord Azrael Mourningstar was once a Portal Master during a time in which there were quite a few prominent family trees of Portal Masters in Skylands and, while most of them were heroic folk that helped the downtrodden and all that jazz, a good handful of them grew up to be the upper class and thus turned into spoiled rich lords with their own estates and caches of ill-begotten wealth. It was a time that Portal Masters were worshiped like Demigods and it went to some (well, most) of their heads. After all, they’re basically powerful wizard folk and can control armies of loyal companions. Kaos wasn’t the only person to believe that Skylands was rightfully his.

Take, for instance, Azrael. He believed that his innate blood magic and his family’s immense wealth made him invincible and that he had command over the forces of life and death itself since his main focus was in the Undead Element. He tried some foolhardy conquest in order to establish himself as a new King that ended with him laying on his back in the middle of a battlefield with a javelin stabbed through his chest.

As he lay on the ground dying, he tried to use his Portal Master magic to "mend my soul, flesh and bone" ...but the thing with arcane magicks is that they’re kiiiinda hard to say when you’re mortally wounded and your mouth is full of your own blood. So he accidentally said “bind my soul from flesh to bone”.

As a result, he didn’t slip away Beyond the Veil but instead locked himself in the mortal plane as an Undead, lost most of his Portal Master powers (only humans can be Portal Masters and the Undead don’t count as “human” no matter how human their remains are), and was magically rendered a horrific shell of his former self. He limped back to his expansive manor on the edge of the Underlands, long stick still stabbed through his chest, locked himself in there, and tried his hardest to do SOMETHING to reverse it.

But as he poured over his family’s giant library of magic tomes and tried every spell and failed every single time, he just kinda rotted away over the years since the spell only magically preserved his bones until he was an angry, vengeful skeleton that hated everything.

Centuries later he now goes by Moneybone because he’s a skeleton that is very, very wealthy and he wants the whole world to know that he’s very, very wealthy. He’s let his old name fall away to the sands of time since Azrael has gone in the history books as being one of the worst Portal Masters to ever exist and always wears a suit of armor to cover up the fact that his rib cage broke when the javelin hit him.

Not many people know that he was once a Portal Master since he’s far too bitter to bring it up.

No one really knows...except for Kaos, who used this as a bargaining chip...

...and yes I know he looks like Dick Dastardly, that was intentional on account of his mustache.
