Because Maria found the toy store very very enticing. Eventually Sonic is the one who finds her in the store and ends up buying her the kendama; teaching her the concept of gifts and giving things to people willingly without expecting anything in return. She also learns gratitude and later on gets Amy to help her make a chilidog to thank Sonic in return.

The kendama then becomes her favourite toy that she plays with, trying to get all the techniques down and such. Even using it as a weapon against the badniks in self defence.
