Honestly, I could never figure it out either. Sure, the armor give them a 'bug like' appearance, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I hated the original bug like helmet as it was described by this helmet looks great but the tail i still don't like, i'd rather the tail not be there at all on pegasi power armour or it just be like standard power armour but again that's me

The bug-like helmet, it was mostly the visors, was a reference to the early Fallouts; when powerarmor had an insectoid appearance. Also, it was a running joke that the average wasters couldn't tell if they were people in armour or just a species of mutant, bi-pedal insects. Both were just as likely.
