Description     Tessa peeked around the corner, listening carefully for the sound of her housemate. The coast may have been clear. On either side of her, the hallway stretched out before her for what seemed like miles. The freshly painted walls rose like a holy passage. The floor shone in the noonday sun, reflecting blindingly off the glass of hanging photos. Amanda had cleaned the whole house the day before, warning Tessa not to make even the smallest of messes. The normal sized human had a special friend coming over that she desperately wanted to impress. There was a new rug in the living room and the fireplace had been cleaned out for the first time in years. She had even used a broom! The house looked like people more mature than their early twenties lived there. Normally any mess four inch tall Tessa made would have gone unnoticed, but this time she knew Amanda would see it a mile away.

It was a good thing cats didn’t make messes.

Quickly, Tess made her way down the hall, her heels clacking loudly as she ran. The noise was so much louder than when the hall was filled with miscellaneous junk. Tessa wondered where her housemate had put it all. The emptiness was strange; from the moment they moved in, the hall had been a catch-all for things they didn’t know what to do with. Without anything there, the place felt abandoned. Tessa shivered a little at the thought of being left alone in the rather unfriendly neighborhood.

At the end of the hall, Tessa climbed her little staircase to the front window.  Curled up in one of the empty flowerpots was a fluffy, brown and white, green eyed kitten. Or, Tessa assumed it was a kitten – it was small for a full grown cat, but bigger than what she thought a kitten should have been. Using the crank, Tessa opened the window and leaned over the sill. The cat looked up at her, the tip of its tail swaying back and forward.

“I’m going to call you Charmy, because you’re going to charm the pants off Amanda until she can’t stand to look at you,” Tessa cooed at the kitten. “But don’t worry about her; after her date we’ll both curl up in her lap and she’ll melt. You’ll be part of the family in no time.”

The kitten purred loud enough for Tessa to hear. In one smooth motion, it leapt onto the ledge beside her. Reaching up, she scratched at the underside of the kitten’s chin. Its curious eyes gazed into the house. Tessa eagerly began explaining the house to the kitten, ignoring the fact that it probably couldn’t understand or care about what she was saying. But it didn’t matter to her; she was far too excited about having a new pet. Yawning, the kitten licked at its paws, cleaning away the muck that had collected in its fur. After making sure it got every last speck of dirt, the kitten fixed its eyes on Tessa. Meowing loudly, it took a swipe at her. The movement made Tessa jump. Its claws had just missed her, sweeping at the hem of her sun dress. Tessa shut her mouth, backing away. The purring intensified and the kitten lowered itself. Tessa’s back hit the wall as the cat leapt at her. She sank low, trying her best to protect herself. But the blow never came. She didn’t feel any pain.

    “Tess, open your eyes,”

Hesitantly, Tessa opened her eyes. Amanda was standing outside the window, holding the cat by the scruff of the neck. There was no guy with her, but a fluffy, white, long haired rabbit with a big pink bow in her other arm.

“No cat,” Amanda stressed. “but you can name your new bunny.”
