A fairly common misconception about rarepairs is that most of them are crack ships which is why they aren't popular. I know not everyone thinks this since I generally only see this mentality among the most narrow-minded of shippers but it's still worth correcting.
Some rarepairs are crack ships but not all crack ships are even rarepairs - Jack Frost x Elsa being a prime example proving this. The fact is a ship can be a rarepair for any number of reasons and sometimes, there's no clear reason for why a ship is a rarepair. A ship being canon might not even save it from being a rarepair, like Z x Bala from Antz.
In my experience, the most common factors that contribute to a ship becoming a rarepair is other ships with the characters involved being more popular and the characters themselves not being the most popular.
