The Ohio folktale of the Corn Cryptid is one that has been passed down for many centuries. No matter what you call it; The Maize King, The Stalker, or simply a demon of the field, the Corn Cryptid is an all-powerful being of might and corn.
The legend varies from village to village. His appearance varies from village to village. But the principle remains the same; The Cryptid is the father of corn. He is believed to possess the power to cripple a field or grow a new one right out of the ground. When a terrible famine strikes, the villagers turn to the Cryptid and beg for mercy through various rituals. If there is a particularly plentiful harvest, the village will celebrate with banners depicting his image while performing corn dances. In some cases people will attempt to summon him, drawing lines in the dirt of the fields and placing objects in the center as offerings while chanting various incantations. But none of these variations are known to work.
In some places he is seen as an angel. In others a devil. When mothers tuck their children in at night, they warn them to behave well tomorrow, lest the Corn Cryptid drag them into the fields, never to be seen again. Some people believe that corn itself is created from the ground up bones of naughty children. Others will argue that the Cryptid is a being of wisdom and happiness. If you are to encounter him, he will grant you anything from the ability to turn objects to corn to something as powerful as manipulating the seasons.
Others seek to hunt him. Out of fear or out of madness and the hunger for power nobody knows. When ground up, his horns are believed to cure any illness. A necklace of his teeth will grant the wearer eternal life and immunity. Or something as simple as rubbing a handful of fur against the skin will remove it of blemishes and cuts.
The Corn Cryptid lives at the center of the biggest corn maze in the middle of Ohio. If you can reach the center, you'll find the entrance to his lair. But this has never been done. Many people go mad within the maze, going in but never returning. They'll fall asleep at night and claim that when they wake up the paths have shifted. While the food supply is plentiful, the corn there is enchanted to increase the consumer's thirst. Some die within a few hours due to lack of water and heat stroke.
It is believed that the necklace is the source of The Cryptid's power. That the corn charm dangling from his neck, once placed upon others, will grant them the ability to do everything he can do. But nobody knows for certain. Very few encounter him, and very few live to tell the tale.
