Original drawing date: today
I was getting a bit exhausted by having to learn new anatomy every time, and I'm still not very good with coloring pencils. So I decided to return to the familiar and re-design one of my old characters with my current skills. As I have a bit better grasp on anatomy, shading and colors now. This really was so much fun to do, and way easier to get in the flow.
I want to redesign quite a few older characters, and give them clothes that fit them. Honestly the only reason I EVER drew naked characters is because I couldn't get a handle on clothes.
What have I learned/done better?
-Compared to the last drawing of her? EVERYTHING. But in my current progression level, I'd say finding colors that play nice together while still staying true to the original design was my greatest accomplishment. She originally had a bright red (primary red) top, khaki pants and a bright yellow belt. The yellow was supposed to be a reference to an item of her dad, which was a yellow bell. I decided to incorporate both the bell design and the yellow as metallics.
-I looked up some more animal references when it came to the markings
-Tried to give general thoughts to shapes and fur. In this character, the types of fur vary a lot and convey a lot of the emotion. Think studio gibli hair when someone gets upset.
What could I do better?
-For the life of me, I couldn't give her realistic ears that wouldn't change her look drastically. This is a really old anatomically incorrect way of drawing for me, but it just suits her so well.
