My biggest problem with this is the burn-through. I personally dislike it. It is an issue with digital cameras. Where the light is too intense, you get white areas with no detail. You either have to change the exposure or the iso to get color and detail in those areas. I usually find it easiest to just focus on the brightest part of the composition and lock in the metering, then recompose my shot so I get a minimum or no burn-through, preferably none. Yes, it will darken the overall photo but I find that less offensive than the burn-through. JMHO.

Actually, if you use matrix metering with the sun as the center, you get a better balance of light and dark often without the need to later lighten the rest of the photo. Spot metering is more for subtler contrast differences where you don't want part to wash out. You will have to play with it to see what I mean. You learn which types of scenes you need which for just by shooting enough of them. When I first got serious about photography about 20 years ago, I took a course mostly to see how a camera sees. The prof when he learned my art background asked what he was supposed to teach me. His suggestion was just to take lots of photos until I learned and to experiment, experiment, experiment. At that time, I didn't have a camera that would do everything for you. Even though I do now, I still experiment and often push my camera to its technical limits and have certain user settings for some things but you can learn how to manipulate even the fully automatic settings pretty well. As far as a professional Deva goes, I can't claim to have sold very many but I do have over 10,000 digital sunset files since early 2005. And that's weeded to a degree, at least, the worst have been removed.

now that you have the d40 a nd grad filter would have improved this shot. You can make the water look like glass with the long exposure. I do not have one of these but there on my want list with every thing else.
