Based on my understanding of the story (so far):

1. For failing to intercede on his cousin Rose's behalf when she was about to be executed. (She came looking for him but was caught and accused of being a spy. He could've saved her with a word, but felt it was in his best interests to let her die because he thought he might get asked questions later by a political rival.)

2. For failing to tell his lover, Grand Templar Mary Silverlock, that he was a Keidren posing as a human, before becoming intimate with her and impregnating her with Raine.Β Β

3. For joining pre-amnesia Trace in his coup against Mary, which led to Mary being turned into a Keidren and both she and Raine being sold into slavery. (Which leads to the event pictured here.)

4. For failing to take any responsibility for Raine at any point in her life, up to and including teaching her how to shapeshift, which is why Rose has taken Raine under her wing.Β

Basically, Euchre is an unprincipled opportunist who uses people to achieve his objectives, irrespective of the harm or damage he causes them.Β Β

Oh, I see...so I don't have a good understanding of the story and needed you to explain it to me. Well that's certainly good to know that we're having a conversation where you aren't condescending to me or anything.

But alright, I'll entertain you. Let's look at your counter-assertions to my points:

1. (TLDR) There's no evidence that interceding on behalf of your kin would've saved her, and certainly not without absorbing some risk to yourself, so why bother?

I mean, sure....if we completely ignore the fact that:

A) Euchre is in a position of power, fully capable of calling the execution off all by his lonesome (but elects not to - in his own words - because that opens a *possible* vulnerability to a political rival);
B) is currently in a relationship with the ultimate authority, the Grand Templar, who could - at his request - call off the execution for basically any reason Euchre chose to invent; and
C) most importantly, that this is HIS KIN, HIS FAMILY, who he knows is not a spy, has committed no crime, and has not wronged him in any way.

If you see nothing inherently wrong with him allowing his cousin - who is only in this position because she came looking for him out of love and concern - to swing by the neck until dead, then I have to seriously question what your personal scale of right and wrong looks like, because that is cold to the point of unfeeling. And let's be very clear here: Rose was DEAD, if not for Mary. Euchre turned his back and walked away as if Rose meant less than nothing to him. And you claim, "Euchre is not a bad person?" How do you reconcile that?Β

2. (TLDR) If it's personally dangerous to tell your love partner the truth, keep lying to her, regardless of the consequences to her.Β

I don't even know where to begin on this one. If the person you love most in the world is someone who doesn't even deserve the truth out of you, particularly when that truth ENDANGERS them, then can you earnestly say that you love them? I mean, this is the rough equivalent of being HIV-positive and not telling your partner because you're afraid it will cost you your relationship. Because if you get down to brass tacks, that's basically what Euchre did, by impregnating her with a half-Kiedran child that she now had to explain and started her downfall as Grand Templar. Even if you make the argument that Kiedran and humans aren't supposed to be able to produce offspring - so how was he supposed to know this was possible? - the fact that he knew that if he was ever discovered it would have cost Mary everything, and had no cares about this, does not speak well of his character. Euchre was USING her, plain and simple. On some level did he love her? Maybe, but certainly not enough to worry about what would happen to her, and certainly not enough to trust her with the truth. That's 100% being an unprincipled opportunist. Again, how do you reconcile him endangering her, much less lying to her, and say he's not a bad person?

3. (TLDR) You have no obligation to help the ex your lies helped tear down.

I find it interesting that your counter-assertion is phrased in such a way that Euchre has two choices: to either sit idly by and do nothing, or help Trace overthrow Mary. You don't even consider the possibility of him helping Mary stave off the coup. Yes, Mary told him to get lost after his lies to her were uncovered, but do you think - given his power - that his siding with Mary would not have turned the tide in this coup attempt? Granted, deus ex machina, if things didn't go the way they did, Tom doesn't have a story to tell, and we have to accept that. But to say that after everything he did that he was under no desire or remorse to help her, not even guilt over the position he put her in, simply further cements the idea that he didn't really love Mary, but used her as a means to an end.Β

But wait, I hear you say, he didn't HAVE to rescue her; he didn't HAVE to make the deal to have her life spared. No, he didn't. But again, deus ex machina; if he doesn't, Tom doesn't have this part of the story. On a larger scale, however, if you're saying that you think it's a sign of good character to cost your former lover everything - her power,Β  her position, her wealth, her security - because he ultimately saved her from being sold into slavery, then I have to once again question what your scale of good and bad looks like. That's like burning down someone's house and then presenting them with a coupon for a free meal at IHOP and expecting karma points for it.Β

4. (TLDR) It's never established that Euchre ever knew about Rahne, so he has no obligation towards her.

This is the only one I will agree that you have a valid point on, HOWEVER with the caveat that it seems rather strange for a character that is so frequently portrayed in the comic as being mysteriously "in the know" about what's going on in the big picture, could somehow be completely oblivious to the fact that his former lover gave birth not long after he left, and that he would have ZERO interest in learning more about the particulars of that birth. Does that really sound like Euchre as we have seen him to this point? One more time, deus ex machina, this is all part of Rahne's backstory, and that's that. But again, it's a backstory that is largely predicated on the fact that Euchre largely did not give a damn about anything save his own interests. And lest you think I'm reading this wrong, even Rose makes the observation to Rahne that this sounds exactly like something Euchre would do. Now, you don't have to agree with Rose, but Rose is also a Tom character, so for her to make that observation means I'm not crazy for suggesting it either.

So here's the deal: You like Euchre...and that's fine. I'm not trying to convince you that you shouldn't like Euchre. I'm not suggesting that Euchre lacks complexity or is a bog-standard, mustache-twirling villain. What I'm doing is this: you asked an open question and I gave you the answers I could give you. You are perfectly free not to like or agree my answers, but you aren't going to convince me that what he did to Rose, to Mary, and to at least some extent, Rahne, are in anyway "understandable or even justifiable," as you put it. I do NOT see how you can reconcile that Euchre is a good person. Character is about how you treat people and Euchre treats people as if they are a means to his personal ends.Β

You're so precious; taking the coward's way out by accusing me of "intentionally misrepresenting" your comments, because you can't defend any of the points I've presented you with. What a meanie I am! So beneath your time and attention!

*laughs*

But okay. Honestly, I didn't expect much out of you from the first, when you declared the need to educate me because clearly I didn't understand Euchre's complexities. That basically set the tone that you were going to dismiss anyone or anything that didn't conform to your assertions. But...I tried. Lord knows we live in an era where challenging someone to defend their position is considered bullying, so I hope you're secure in your safespace.Β

And just so there's no hard feelings, here's a parting gift for you: Tom's own take on Raine's feelings about Euchre:Β  www.patreon.com/posts/raine-co…

Make sure you check out the comment section as well. Woof! Well, I guess you better get busy telling everyone, including Tom, that they've all misunderstood the character and need education. I won't keep you from it any longer.Β

Bye now!

I'm a little confused. Was it that Raine was locked up in a cabin while her mother was busy being Grand Templar, then when Trace came to power he just captured and enslaved them both?

Iron1Fox In reply to Reptani [2019-04-26 08:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Raine because of her keidran form was kept away from the Templar and public eye, then when trace took over he cursed Mary to be in wolf form and sold both her and Raine as slaves.

When trace took over as new grand Templar, he cursed Mary to be in wolf form, then sold both her and Raine as slaves...Euchre (Raine's father) who is a keidran in human disguise, freed them both and helped them escape.
