One of my favourite new characters from OotP. I'm not sure about the thestral, though. I don't think it looks nearly bony enough, and the neck is far too long. I knew I should have found some reference pictures before I started drawing...This was only meant to be an outline for a CGed piece, but somewhere along the line, I started shading and didn't stop. Unfortunately, it scanned horribly as I stupidly used a No. 2 pencil on cheap printing paper. I had to crank down the brightness in order to preserve the details and shadows, and did a bit of CG work to bring out the highlights. (But I'm filing this under "traditional art" because the bulk of the work was done the old fashioned way.)
Drawn with cheap ass pencils, 20 lb. printing paper, and a touch-ups with Corel PhotoPaint.

I don't think there's any official art for the thestrals...there might be some artwork for the book covers, but there's multiple book covers by different artists depending on the country it's printed in. And interpretations vary by fanartist, so I'd say this is about as legitimate as any other. And a rather good one, I'd say--I recognized both the threstral and Luna for who they were upon seeing the thumbnail. The scraggly bits of hair on the thestral is a nice touch; I especially like the sunken in bits of flesh.
And yes, Luna's "La la la, happy~!" expression is quite amusing. :รพ

It's gorgeous! The thestral looks so creepy--if that's what they look like, I totally get why they freaked Harry out. It is a little on the chubby side, but I think the necks are supposed to be long anyway. Luna is great, and I love her carefree demeanor next to that freaky animal.
