I'm working on background pieces for the production FALLEN ANGEL.

The setting is a cemetery very like the Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa Italy. This is one of the world's most beautiful cemeteries, now restored after it was badly damaged during WWII. It's very close to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and I enjoyed my visit there. There were beautiful frescoes on the walls, these have been taken away to a nearby museum while the art conservators try to put them back together. The stone work has to be seen to be truly appreciated; you can put your hands around the thin columns in the windows. It was an unexpected bonus of the visit to Pisa.

The colonnade scenic piece is lower left, while a mock up of it with a final background (painted piece over the reference photograph) gives you an idea of the final setting during the daylight. I still have to paint the other colonades and the dome on to different layers so I can use animation camera tricks to create a 3D like effect plus add a night time sky.

The production of course will take place at midnight as is appropriate for all cool cemetery scenes.

Once I'm done with all the parts, I'll publish the windows and door ways as PNG art parts for other people to use if the would like. The gothic gingerbread stone work looks super difficult to do, but it is actually quite a bit easier than you would think. The carvings were taken from a photograph of a sarcophagus in the Camposanto and incorporated into my marble walls with a little layer blending magic.
