After Jupiter gained its independence in 2103, with the help of the Federation of the Asteroid Belt, Jupiter became a republic. Originally the early republic was dominated by four main parties, the Democratic Party, the Union Party, the National Party, and the Representative Party. Originally the Democratic Party was more left leaning, the Union was more centrist, and the National and Jovian Representative were more right-leaning and center-right respectfully. The Union Party originally was a multinational party advocating for political union and incorporation with the Astro Federation (which is why Jupiter replaced its flag with one that looks similar to the Federation's), until 2125, when the Astro Federation's branch of the Union Party merged with Astro Federation's Democratic and Federal Parties to become the Federal-Democratic Union and moved to the left. As a result, the Union Party began moving to the right, with its more left leaning members going to the Jovian Representative Party. Around the 2170's the parties had completely flipped ideologically, with the Democratic and Union Parties moving more to the right, and the National and Jovian Representative Parties moving to the left, though at this point they were more center-right and center-left respectfully. On June 12th, 2176, the National and Jovian Representative Parties decided to merge, feeling that they'd have a better chance in that years presidential election if they united while the Democratic and Union Parties were divided. In response, the Democratic and Union Parties announced they would be merging on August 14th, 2176, though they still ran different candidates which split the vote and allowed the new National-Representative Party to win the election. This however would be the only presidential election the NRP would win. In 2180 the Democratic-Union won the presidency and the Jovan Congress, and since then the NRP has been unable to take back the presidency. The closest the NRP has come to retaking the presidency was in 2200, when the vote was decided by a few hundred ballots, and in 2232 when the NRP lost by 0.23%. While the DU has retained the presidency of Jupiter, it hasn't been as successful on the local and Congressional levels. From 2186-2228, the NRP was in the majority of both houses, and the 2232 the NRP retook control from DU, despite the DU winning the presidency. In 2228, the DU ran former war heroes Roger Powell and Charles Shale for president, against former Admiral Kevin Orville and Richard Fence of the NRP. While both Powell and Shale were popular when they were elected, by the end of their first term they were rapidly losing popularity for their slow reaction to rebuilding after the Great War (2201-2222). While they were able to secure a second term, the fact that they lost the congress, has made the NRP party bosses extremely excited, since this means they could finally win both the presidency and congress from the DU for the first time since 2176.
