Alrighty, STORY TIME!

Shortly after the defeat of Discord by Celestia and Luna, winter came once again and the ponies of Equestria started working towards the Hearth's Warming Eve festivities. However, on the very night that they would hold their grand get together, a massive blizzard entrenched their ceities, making it impossible to open the doors and even more impossible to get to the food that they had stockpiled for the feast. Every family dispaired... until, without warning, the very meal they had planned to celebrate with began dropping down the chimnies in soft, stocking like sacks. Surprised and thankful, the ponies celebrated in their own home, eating as the snow melted away in the winter sun.

Eventually, the ponies were able to step out into the light again, but none of them could figure out who had gathered their meal and gifted them with such a wonderful blessing. None, that is, until an elder reindeer stepped out, holly draped round his antlers. He spoke in Nickeraguan (pony spanish), explaining that he and his wandering clan of fellow Reindeer were so gratful for the vanquishing of Discord that they owed a debt to all of ponykind; when they realized the ponies had been snowed in without food, they had taken it upon themselfs to feed them and had stuffed their feast into the padded sacks ransacked from a large building (which turned out to be a clothier shop that specialized in socks). However, the red-nosed reindeer left before he could properly be thanked, and his real name is lost to history.

From this event came a tradtional Hearth's Warming Eve legend, where a jolly and well-fed old reindeer will prance across the rooftops and drop presents down the chimney from his sleigh. Some called the old deer Holly Hooves, based on the holly in the antlers. Others called him the Cloven Saint, becuase of his hooves; this later became shortened to Santa Cloves. Scholars agree that the name Jingle Bells was added only after the anachronistic bell-laden saddle became part of the traditional image, replacing the former red coat. There is some debate as to wether the reindeer still feel themselves indebted to ponykind, as they are rarely seen and tend to only migrate during winter; still, some ponies dress up and play the part in order to entertain the little foals. (It's pretty unicersally agreed the cutie mark is incorrect, but they don't tell the foals that.)

That sounds great! You're welcome to use Santa Cloven if you ever expand that, just give me credit, of course.
It's kinda weird that so few have thought of this. I've been seeing "pony with Santa hat and beard" and/or "pony as a reindeer driving a sleigh", without any idea of what it implies. These are human cultural symbols. Presenting them unchanged leads to all sorts of questions... Is he human? If he's a pony, why can't he pull the sleigh? Are there elves? It'd just be too weird. Having them all be flying reindeer simplifies things, I think.
And now Derpy in a reindeer costume in that Flash game, separate from the Santa costume... even you, Studio B??

I dunno, I was just trying to think of a clever pun for the name.
I hadn't thought of what the elves might be... miniature horses?

Well, here's a thought: he has eight other magical reindeer who help him out, only they use their antlers instead of the power of the nose. He'd be the Rudolph to their Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, and Blitzen. Only not naming him Rudolph, because the name means Famous Wolf, as it turns out. The others could help him out by going out to ask the children what they want, as well as helping to pull his sleigh!

And they live in the wintry Hearth Mountain, where the founders of Equestria became good friends. The magical heart they made actually empowered the reindeer!

...I am going to make a fanfic out of this, I swear.
