I like the fact that is has such depth and dimension. It reminds me of a half-buried ruin or monument.

This is an awesome idea. The execution is... well, not as awesome, but isn't that always they way it is when you are first trying a technique?
Anyway, the main issue here is the image quality. In full view, it manages to look pixellated AND blurry. Now, I'll admit that don't know anything about Terragen. Seriously, nothing. I don't know if there is perhaps a way to fix render settings to make it all nice and crisp and smooth... but what I do know is that no matter the program, rendering large and downsizing is an almost surefire strategy. Case in point: the thumbnail to this looks awesome.
If I were you, I would render this about 10 times as large as you have now. It's huge, I know, but it could be worth it. I have no idea what Terragen's rendering times are like or if this would even be feasible... but I hope it would be because I would love to see the results.
Summary: It's an AWESOME idea, an awesome new, innovative technique, but artistically it looks like you still have to work out the kinks. That's completely understandable, since this is the first time I've seen this done. I can't wait to see it get refined.
Oh, and for what it's worth, I also agree that it is still a fractal.

Definitely still a fractal, but I'm not sure why it's so blurry...

It's 3D, sticking straight out at you. With blur added, I guess. Same program I used last night to make the terrain for my project!

1px. Guassian blur.
Without it, the shadows were extremely jagged.
