Description Here's the last of these. There are three other "main characters" in the first issue but they're not important enough for me to spend time on their sheet.

And before you ask, no, he doesn't have a mechanical arm, it's just a screwdriver tool he wears/uses.

Gonna assume he prefers the Philips head screwdriver.

It would be a great article for Sketch Magazine following the process you went through.

Ha. Thanks, but I'm not nearly reputable or talented enough to be considered for Sketch Magazine.

Well, I'm the editor and I like that style sheet you did. I try to fill Sketch with as much cool stuff as I can. So, think about it.

What time frame are we looking at? And is there an email address I should have to contact you?

I know it's been forever since I mentioned using this in Sketch Magazine. Long, long boring story. I can only offer comps and being in Sketch (which should be on a bi-monthly schedule from here on in).

How do spot blacks get coloured? as in, which areas do you choose to be solid blacks, excluding the shadows?

Is there a general rule or can you just decide based on whichever sits more comfortable?

Well that's good because I would not want an arm like that.

ChristianL337 [2009-12-13 20:32:43 +0000 UTC]

I first thought of the awkwardness of trying to screw in something with your entire arm... but then I figured that the screw driver could rotate by itself.

His sense of fashion both goes well together and astounds me. o3o (his screwdriver/ tool he wears/ uses is also unique and cool )

Your art/ style is one that I always like to see, so I can't wait for the comic.

And finally, the silhouettes. That's the 2nd time I've seen/ heard of the importance of these after having just learned about them today. I'm now forced to go and get my own characters recognizable via silhouettes, so thank you very much. c:

...sorry for random addition in the comment, too; I just felt the need to use/ notice this somewhere. xD;;

Yeah, silhouette's are a lot more important than most people think. I guess it's because you never really think about it just looking at a character normally.

Lookin' great. I don't understand why, but the spot blacks remind me of Mad World. I guess it's just the look is all.

Too bad the pink and the flowers aren't seen in the spot blacks.

MichaelMayne [2009-12-08 22:44:23 +0000 UTC]

Are your linearts and spot blacks pure black and white? i.e. all hard edges, no blurring/anti-aliasing?

I've been experimenting with the Threshold lately to establish stark black and white (and then do any further drawing with the Pencil tool, instead of Brush). It looks pretty fugly unflattened and up close, but when everything gets merged, zooming out to roughly print size makes the B/W contrast less conspicuous. Just wondering if you do anything similar, 'cause I've really been digging all this Diesel stuff lately!

tysonhesse In reply to MichaelMayne [2009-12-09 03:22:54 +0000 UTC]

no, they haven't been threshold'ed or anything. There's some slight aliasing but it's zoomed out enough not to tell

Hey, you added the hand in the third version!
Anyway, he looks reeeeaaaally good both in the colored and spot black version. You're making an awesome cast, can't wait to see the comic done.

Hawaiian shirts are always the best, awesome character designing there. The rough feeling you get from looking at all the characters is what makes them so appealing, I think. Much different vibes from Rittz or Skip.

haha, j/k... but I did think he had an artificial arm as soon as I saw him

I like Diesel with the more substantial outfit and longer hair too, btw.

I absolutely love the way your lines look inked, and your flats look better than anything I'll ever color. Love this character and his floral shirt. I'm really interested in seeing this story.
