Description The first film of the well-known trilogy The Lord of the Rings came out in theaters nearly ten years ago. I was too little at that time, I think, to get emotionally involved into. Yet I had read the books (skipped a few description paragraphs, but read it indeed). I was seeking more fun, more adventures, less talking and ...yeah, less elvish riddles XD And honestly, I wasn't into hobbits that much XD
Sooooooooo, my point is, I've never watched the Fellowship of the Ring again until now. Yes it's possible. Oh, buying the DVD helped surely *grins* But I was too lazy to do so until now, and honestly, I remembered the first film as beeing quite boring. Oh how I was wrong . It's boring for a eleven years old girl and it's boring when you have to sit down the whole three hours to watch it (like in cinemas), but when you can stop and watch it bit by bit, it's WONDERFUL!
I'm captivated by the images (landscapes, shots, the whole thing), and that's all the more true I've known John Howe's work for a long time (he's amazing. I mean, he draws well, he sketches über-well, he's an art genius but I also agree with many of his ideas and point of views).

Of course, my favorite character came out to be Boromir. First, he's the only one - along with the hobbits- to have no "super speed", "super-stick-glowing-in-the-dark", "super strength" or "super-asset-of-doom-like-being-a long-lost-king's-heir". Careful, I have nothing against Aragorn and Legolas! (the mere thought would got me killed by fangirls anyway). I even think Legolas is quite interesting for an elf. I mean, I still burst in laughter anytime i see him walk on snow (...don't you?...but it's friggin' funny!) and he's not as passiv as many of his siblings. The elves fleeing Middle Earth has always seemed a bit of a act of cowardice to me, hee.
Aragorn was a very interesting character, until his marvelous-and-yet-doomed ancestors were thrown in the story. It's really cool for the plot, but not that much for the character as a human being. I mean, I like a character with self-taught skills, who's strong and wise not just because he is or because of his blood, but for the many things he experienced. The Aragorn at the beginning of the film looked very much like that, but alas...well. He still is cool.
Second, Boromir's a noble man inside, with great ideals. And a great personal story too.
Third, you can't hate someone who gets owned by two hobbits while teaching them the sword. No you can't .
And darn Sean Bean for being such a good and appealing Boromir.

So, I decided to draw him, movie verse. By memory, more or less. And I also added an OC. Pretty close in lookings and personality to Asuka in fact.
I can already hear your toughts: Romance!! Romance Alert!!
Sorry to dissapoint you, but no. I imagine a whole lot of curious interest maybe between these two, but not a romance with love declarations under the moonlight/during battles/riding horses and unbreakable vows , dear God no. Any time you get much close to this, it turns Marysue-ish before you even know it.There are many fanfictions around already dedicated to that.
I rather see her as a woman who intrigues him, someone he doesn't quite know if must be considered a lady or a "fellow". I first thought of a thief girl instead of a warrior, completely exuberous and wry, with a sharp tongue, so she would have been a bit of a comic relief. You know, a cross between jack sparrow and Locke Lamora (great novel). Someone who hides her skills because it's so much fun when people underestimate her
But finally, I think the girl would perfectly complete the fellowship as a Beorning. Come to think of it, Beorn is a important second character in Bilbo the hobbit, but he's nowhere to be seen in LotR (if so I don't recall). To put it simply, Beorn's a shape shifter who transforms into a giant bear, and his lands are far far north, near Mirkwood.

It'd be quite interesting to add a skin changer to the team
She (damn her name, don't have one) would likely be a wild animal, either a wolf or a lynx I don't know yet .
So, my point was, introducing this kind of people definitely gets into the mold of LotR story and atmosphere, I think. Plus, Beornings are not very well known at the time of the war of the Ring, so it adds myyyyyyyyystery *winks winks*

Any idea for her name? (no elvish please. I mean, everybody does that, and what shape shifters would have anything to do with elves ??)Someone suggested me Grine, which is quite close to Grim in fact. Kind of desperate for a name
I re-draw her face a thousand times before being satisfied. I almost made a whole in the paper...But I'm still really pleased with how her pose came out.

Shame on me for Boromir's boots. I hadn't too much problems with his head, but the boots really bugged me. Bugged me so much that I finally put a rock in front.
Middle Earth's really cool world : you can draw rocks and grass and trees everywhere to hide anything and it will get unnoticed.

Love how she looks! It's so awesome to find another Boromir fan. So many people don't like him, but I love him so much.

Hi fellow Boromir fan!
Well, complex characters are always my favorites. Although the movie in it's theatrical version heavily stressed the dark side of boromir, making him look like a basic villain...

I agree; characters who are more grey than others are more interesting than characters who are completely good or completely bad.

People keep saying that the movies made him look more like a villain, but I didn't see that, honestly (and I haven't read the books). I think that he looked more like a man desperate to protect his home when it looked like nobody cared about it, and still cared deeply about his hobbit friends (which made me love him more).

Sorry for the late reply I always fancy comments, and I'm glad to find a fellow Boromir appreciator!
Elanor sounds really nice and delicate. I'm currently thinking of creating a little sister to the character, and Elanor would awesomely fit!
I'll probably name her Brisild like some suggested, since I kind of wanted her to be a Beorning and have a name both feminine and a bit "rough", with a germanic/scandinavian sounding

I would suggest naming her Erien - it is a name of some character from Tolkien's writings which were scrapped/not published (as far as I remember, she was a forgotten wife of someone, one of many "forgotten wives" in the tales of Middle Earth). I have read all those "apocryphes" and really liked this name - it is simple and beautiful at the same time, and not too elvish. At this time I prefer humans to elves, I mean, I like elves, but only the Noldor

First, sorry for the delayed answer, I haven't been on DA for a while...your comment was really pleasant to read though^^!
Lassiel is really pretty for a name. For the moment I chose Brisild (see : [link] ), which sound quite...er, "rough" for a name, but that's on purpose
However, I've contemplated for a moment to add a second name to tone it down a bit, and Lassiel is perfect!

Oh, and most important : thanks again for the comment and the fav!

This is quite neat. I'm just getting into LOTR again myself, out of excitement for The Hobbit, but everyone on the internet is like, "Psh, Lord of the Rings? That's so 2000."

I admit, Legolas nancing about on the snow always gets a chuckle out of me. It's even funnier in the book, where he just prances around taunting the others. "Hey, why don't you guys just walk on top of the snow? Oh that's right, you can't. But I can! Ha ha!" I do rather like Orlando Bloom as Legs but it's a shame so much of him was cut out for the films, in the books he's actually snarky and funny instead of just...silently intense.

u-chi-ne In reply to ScheherazOdd [2011-04-29 10:25:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed, come to think of it Legolas made many light jokes in the books. With Eowyn, he was actually the character I was most interested in
"Silently intense" -> totally describes Legolas from the film. That, or speaking with metaphors XD. But still, you can say he IS a young elf compared to the others because he sometimes lets emotions overtake him (for example, when he reveals Aragorn's true name at the council of Elrond, so that Aragorn's obliged to literally told him to Shut up -or something with the same meaning. Second example is when Gimli's threatened by Rohan riders. And I guess there are others I don't remember...). That's refreshing in a way, since we are accustomed to elvish deep 'wisdom'.
Orlando Bloom's also a particurlaly, er, "wide-eyed" Legolas. I guess the aim was to show he has many enhanced abilities to scan his surroudings, but to me it again makes him look a bit immature (compared to his siblings of course, not humans).
Jackson has deliberately focused all humor Legolas could have on his relationship with Gimli. Much easier for the audience.
Still one thing bugged me : I've not watched again all of the three films, so I may be mistaken, but I don't think I saw Legolas smile just once. I mean, SMILE, not just a curl of the lips. That's a shame. I have no problem picturing the Legolas of the books smiling, I even imagine him doing so quite often...

By the way, thanks a bunch for commenting, it's really nice to discuss a bit about opinions on LotR
For the moment, the conclusion of it all is: I HAVE to read again the books. Definitely.

Now that you mention it...I think you're right. Orlandolas never ever smiles, except at Aragorn's coronation, Frodo waking up after being rescued from Mount Doom, and in a scene in the extended edition of FotR when Gimli tells him about Galadriel giving him some of her hair. That's really bothersome, the way he's always so stone-faced, because Elves are supposed to be jolly. The ironic thing is that they almost switched Legolas and Gimli's personalities; in the books Gimli was this 'warrior poet' type and Legolas was the funny guy, but in the movies Gimli is the main source of comedy relief and Legolas is...well...
