Despite popular Cold War era opinion, you actually stood more of a chance of coming home as a German in Soviet captivity than you did as a Soviet in German captivity. Out of the 5.7 million captured Soviet POW's in German captivity, only 900,000 returned home. That's less than a 1/5 chance of survival. o_O

I once read years ago out of about 90,000 Germans who surrendered at Stalingrad only about 6,000 returned home after the war. I don't know much more about German POWs held by the Soviets than that.

Imagine though: going off to fight, surrendering, surviving a labor camp for a decade or so, and returning home to some place totally different. War is hell even for your enemy

Very true. And in some ways it was even worse for the Soviets: 20+ million dead, and I have read Soviet ex POWs often were sent to the GULAG by Stalin following their return.
