Description In the days of steam locomotives, turntables were almost ubiquitous, but in the present day of bi-directional diesels and electrics, they have become all but extinct. This turntable at the Altoona, Pennsylvania locomotive shops of Norfolk Southern is one of the few still in service on a class one railroad.

The Altoona shops were originally built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, and later used in turn by Penn Central, Conrail, and now NS.
