semi-Fanboy alert! I dig macross! Also, i dont dig intakes tilting about the nosecone, i think thats just retarded and should have never been worked into the macross animated series, this is my take of how the GERWALK mode works it slides OFF the engine housing, then locks and rotates, relying on thrust vectoring to keep it stable and aloft. Also, i added the Harrier's mini nozzles on the wingtips ( i forgot what they called them)

PS: oh and my version

hope you all like!

ALL HAIL SHOJI KAWAMORI FOR THE GREATEST MECHA DESIGN IMHO

You're not the only person who loves Macross, after all it hasn't stayed in the top 50 anime for over 30 years for nothing. It stayed #1 for a decade until Akira knocked it out of that slot and even though it's become somewhat obscure it never seems to lack the ability to make lifelong hardcore fans out of people who who have barely watched it. I plan on making a costume of the ship itself, full detail including two different sets of arms(ARMD's and the Daedalus/prometius complete with Destroids in the Daedalud which will open with a similar mechanism as those grabbing claws) and the twin booms dropping, "sparks" lighting up from fiber optic bundles flashing along the middle of the booms, and a pair of hidden headlights in the boom tips for when the cannon fires. I already know that I will have to use the large shoulder mounts to hide where I make it tall enough to not have to modify the top for my head and the lower rim around the thrusters is going to have to move up and down to hide my feet when I walk. The hardest part will be getting all the little details in, but by keeping the top, bottom, and arms separate and allowing for the booms to be removable and starting with those for the top it should turn out excellent. Then I can work on two or three battroids, which won't be even remotely as big a pain as the Macross would be to build.

That sounds like one serious built project my friend... will you be sharing your progress on DA or anywhere else on the web?

Sypoth In reply to ukitakumuki [2012-05-17 05:40:56 +0000 UTC]

Never thought of doing that. But now that you mention it, I might just. The whole thing will consist of at least four separate builds. The Legs being the easiest as the hardest part would be making "thrusters" that I can use as shoes if I really want to go THAT into detail, pipe welded together with a plate attached and a loop for my shoes should so it. but I'm thinking having the blast shields moveable so that when I lift my feet the rim will drop slightly and when I step down they will raise some would be much simpler.

The leg piece would go up to just under my rib cage. The second being the top, since the "shoulders" on the macross are quite bulky I was planning on having my arms come out just above the lowest part of the cowling and making it so that the cowling will swivel giving the illusion that my shoulders are actually higher, this should give me just enough head space to get the bridge fitted to the top.

The booms I would first build the structure out of something light, just strong enough to hold the fiber optic cables, the halogen lamps, and the light system that would give off the special effects, perhaps even a speaker. I'll tie it into a battery hidden in the back of the top or the legs, maybe both.

The Arms will have the wiring tie-ins for the booms and perhaps even a few audio tracks, the ARMDS will have a bar with buttons I can press to lower/raise the booms, fire, and play the audio tracks. The ships of course will have similar buttons, the Prometius will have a claw grabber function that I can use with my fingers, and tumb switched for boom controls, the Deadalus will have a similar setup only instead of closing the claw it instead opens the top, lowers the ramp, I'll use several Battle Tech minis for the Destroids, and a thumb button for some kind of special effect, don't think I'll have any music controls though. Maybe I'll use a frosted plexy on the Daedalus and have a second thumb button that lights up the front of it green.

The whole thing will be made from corrugated plastic board cut so that the corrugation can be hidden with a few hidden nylon straps and maybe some metal work, most likely aluminum, it's stronger than you would guess. I'm debating between the motors and mounts for the Booms whether I want it to be Cam driven or Pulley driven, one will require a bit extra wiring but give me better control over the raising and lowering as it will only be moved one way or the other, the other will make things simpler, but I'll have to lower the booms all the way before they raise back up again and vice versa, either way they are both going into the top with only an anchor for them inside the booms. As for Seeing, well, I'm debating between having hidden peep holes and a periscope, I'm going to have to play around with that one. As for the Arms, the ARMDS give me the advantage of being able to use my hands and more features, but my lower arms and hands will be visible, the Ships will hide my hands, but I won't be able to use my hands other than to control the special effects.

As for the typical heat costumes tend to have, I also planned several vents and fans powered by the batteries so circulate air through the costume, I might even go so far as to use life hacker or instructable to make a mini A/C, hide a few home brew solar panels, and perhaps even insert a camel pouch in the front through which I can sip a nice beverage when I get thirsty.

Yeah, I know, lots of work, but it will be SO worth it. I could see all of my fellow fans jumping in surprise and getting all giddy with googley eyes and drooling little kid expressions, and all the new age wanna be-s looking at it and thinking "Whoa, what kind of bad-ass show is that from?" Sadly I don't think I'll be able to wear it more than a couple of times, the next one I'd make would be the YF-19, either that or the VF-1J Skull Leader, perhaps the VF-4 Lightning III, obscure I know but still worth it, I may also do a version each Zentran and Maeltran battle armors. When I do those though I'm going to brush up on my Zentradi so that I may fluently speak it once again(I'm kinda rusty), I could just see the Kilingon cosplayers giving me funny looks, but for as similar as the two races are in ideals and the amount of real world extras like language(though Zentran was done by the show creators and Klingon was done by the fans) the Zentradi would still so kick the crud out of the Klingons, even at Miclone size.

Well, I hope I didn't bore you with my planning details fro the whole thing. I'm mostly waiting on the funds to build it. I estimate that it will run me between $300 and $1500 to build this costume depending on how much I ultimately want to put into and get out of it. When I'm done I might just auction the thing off, either that or turn it into a statue for my living room and use it during special events.

I think you got it backwards thee. Macross spawned Robotech. Harmony gold took Macross, Mospeda, and Southern Cross and put them together and tried to tie the stories together to make Robotech. Too bad Harmony Gold thinks they own it, I certainly hope Studio Nue wins the ongoing court wars and we can FINALLY get more Macross over here without having to pirate it. Don't get me wrong it's cool to have free stuff, but I WANT to give my $ to Macross! Would't surprise me if the creators are actually the ones supporting the pirating of their show to countries that can't get it because of Harmony Gold, it would fit perfectly right into the overall mindset of their higher ups. After all, Macross is made to be enjoyed, not necessarily for profit, and even so if people didn't pirate it in places that it otherwise cannot be seen, then you just lost an entire market of customers who are now willing to import your merchandise.

I saw this so long ago and it's been an occassional resident of my desktop. I was looking through some other pics and saw the reference pic you had and thought, it looked a lot like it. I think you did it justice (if f-14s were equipped with reactors and a transformation system ). But the first Valkyrie was designed off of the F-14. Particularly the VF-0 from Macross Zero.
