Description Ok, the colours are a little off, but I just don't have time to spend ages fixing them just now.

A young seal investigating my dive buddy - taken at about 10-12m depth, off the Farne Islands, Northumbria (UK). The islands are home to a large seal colony and we tend to go up there most years around this time as the pups tend to be quite playful...

The gnome? Well, its a long story....! Anyway, the seal tried to pick it up, but couldn't quite get a grip and it was weighted down, thankfully

**UPDATE.... the long story....

Ok, a couple of people have asked, so here's the short version of why the gnome is there - its a marketing thing for a spinoff from the company I work for. They use the idea of 'gnomes' as things that are set to work on your website, tasked with performing a certain function (changing content and such). It was an attempt by our marketing people to simplify/dumb down the technology involved, with the idea that it works "as if by magic". So, this was one of the gnomes out for a dive trip, and there are other photos knocking around of it on other holidays etc.

Marketing... {sigh}

is that a Leopard seal?  they are very aggressive, no?

Nope, just a common grey seal (I think its a grey, standard variety we get in the UK anyway).  Not really dangerous although the adults will take a dim view of you approaching their young.  You have to wait for them to come to you really - partly because they are so much quicker and more agile than a diver

Looks like a genuine sea monster. I'd like to hear the story of the gnome some time. Preferably over a beer!

Believe it or not, no beer in the house, but I've had a hectic day, say I'll take a rain check!

Surely a manic day means you deserve a beer? I'm going to indulge, my day was rubbish!

As it's been winter around here, we haven't kept beer in the house. Hot cuppa tea, with some brandy did the trick!

"What you got, seal!? Ain't got nothin on me! Come at me!"

I'm sorry XD I felt an urge to say it.

It's a cute picture though! Seals have been a weakness of mine.

I don't think you're the only one

Fortunately, the gnome decided not to use its hammer on the seal. That could have turned nasty...

TechnoShadowBlood In reply to ukwreckdiver [2011-09-02 12:15:44 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't believe my luck when it tried picking it up I'd been sat there ignoring the seals for about 5 mins, and was just hoping one would show some interest in the gnome...

You're halfway there anyway - you get to see them on the surface, so its only a matter of time before you see them underwater

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to ukwreckdiver [2011-09-13 19:01:24 +0000 UTC]

I hope so! I'm all signed up with my local BSAC club, start learning and pool work in january.

Out of interest, how do you taken your diving photos? My little point and shoot waterproof camera is only good to 5 metres, and I think this year we go to like 20 metres! So do you have a casing or have a special DSLR?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ukwreckdiver In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2011-09-13 20:55:27 +0000 UTC]

Cool I'm sure you'll enjoy it, even if the pool training can sometimes seem a bit tiresome...

I've got a "proper" underwater housing for my compact digital - don't have one for my SLR as they're uber expensive (as in, £1000 or so, and then you need dome ports and so on). Canon make one but its only rated to 40m so I use the Ikelite one, rated to 60m but has been to 75m (although the buttons don't work as well at that depth!)

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to ukwreckdiver [2011-09-15 23:06:10 +0000 UTC]

wow thats expensive... if I really get into diving I'll have to get a housing for my little point and shoot though, I'll go nuts if I can't take photos down there! Doubt I'll be going down that deep for a while though!

ukwreckdiver In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2011-09-16 12:28:48 +0000 UTC]

Well thats for SLR housings... my compact digital housing cost something like £250 ; you can get second hand ones on ebay etc for less than £100 I think, depending on your camera...
