Description Bonobo chimpanzee
Pan paniscus

Milwaukee County Zoo
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Comments: Formerly known as the pygmy chimpanzee, the bonobo is actually a separate species from the well-known common chimpanzee (pan troglodytes). They are more slender in their build and have "puffier" hair that's parted down the middle. This particular ape was a little more subdued that its fellow bonobos and that fact meant I was able to photograph it more easily. I'm sure I'm not the first person to comment on the similarity to people (chimps in general are our closest evolutionary cousin), but I was struck by the facial expressions that they made and found that I was looking for the same lighting and poses that I would expect out of a human portrait sitting.
