Description Ah...the doomed romance of Romeo & Juliet*. Their first meeting at the Capulet’s party. Juliet catches Romeo’s eye, he approaches her. I love the line he says “Hand to hand as holy palmers touch...”. it’s that moment in any Romeo & Juliet play where they are the only two people in the world. In the movie “West Side Story” the rest of the dance fades away; in Shakespeare’s play they are spotlighted, the rest of the cast fading away or into a more distant part of the stage (mmmmm...thrust stages). This is the first moment they touch, breaking the formal physical barrier. It is eye contact, a touch, a brief caress where two minds are blinded to all else but the other.

On a less romantic ranting-about-the-bard-himself mode, there are several little things to explain to further understanding about what is seen. The two gold buttons on their shirtsleeves and collar (Juliet’s double button is on the side of her body turned away) indicate family status of wealth and importance. None would indicate a commoner, one would indicate a family of short standing and substantial wealth, two a family of long stnading and substantial wealth, three would be worn by those in court of the Duke, and four by the Duke himself. For in remembering the story of Romeo & Juliet it must be remembered that both were from families of fair standing and great wealth that are great enemies. The button system is something I’ve added.

I known that Romeo is off-kilter slightly ( damn drawing on angles (see the Progression On A Stick piece to understand...that is of course if it’s up)), and Juliet looks like a doll sitting on a shelf and her hand dissapears behind...but! That’s life! *ponders painting for a moment* The ears look like total carp too But I’ve spent three hours of time I should’ve been studying calculus coloring this piece. It’s my first ever photoshop-colored pencil drawing ^^

This piece based off of a pencil drawing. Spiffed up in Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.

*“Romeo& Juliet”, for all those not exposed to the great bard William Shakspeare (whom I worship on the side by the way if you couldn’t tell), is a tragedy about two youngsters named Romeo Montague (17ish) and Juliet Capulet (14ish). Their families are sworn enemies, so when they fall in love they decide to get married in secret. Juliet’s cousin dies at Romeo’s hand, Romeo is banished from the city. Juliet is supposed to marry someone else (Paris), so to avoid the sin of polygamy, she drinks a special brew that puts into such a deep kind of sleep that she seems as though dead. The family mourns her death, she’s put in the family tomb. Romeo is told to meet her in the tomb, finds her there and thinks she’s dead. He takes poison and dies. Juliet wakes up, finds Romeo dead, has great monologue, then commits suicide with Romeo’s knife. The families come in and over the bodies of their children reconcile their feud. Finis. Not the best summary in the world. The whole play takes place over a time of two days and has a lot of characters I left out ;_; It is a beautiful tale of unrequited love.
