This had always been the single most important thing his father had told him. And Tarek knew his place. He was sworn to the House of Arcadia, sworn to the God King himself, born for only one reason: To protect the God King and those close to him with his very life. His father had never tired reminding him of the benefits a life in the Citadel had over the common life in the cities or the wasteland. And still, Tarek felt the plight of his people, the Wolfen race, who were nothing but slaves and soldiers for the God King. Arcadia was rotten. Rotten to the very core of its once mighty existence. The line of the God Kings, once powerful, wise, the bestowers of life itself to the formerly barren planet Earth, had faded into decadent nothingness over the centuries. Those rulers who had arrived from the Endless Beyond and transformed a silent rock of fire and earth into a prosperous world were now nothing but tyrants in their golden cities.
Countless times Tarek had considered deserting his duties and joining the rebels in the wilds. All those plans had lost their meaning on the day he first laid eyes on the God King's son. He had felt something, unlike anything he ever experienced before. And he knew it had not been him alone when a few days later he was named the prince's personal guard.
Tarek knew his place. It was at his side. Forever.
