Let me quote my tumblr post:

"So the story is basically… Rann and Gareth accidentally find the magic the gods used to create some of the dragons. They decide to cast it because they’re ARCANE DRAGONS and hesitation is death of soul! However as they are not gods, the magic didn’t work perfectly. Rann broke a lot of bones and strained a lot of muscles and was shedding all week after the spell was cast.

The reason they succeeded even as well as they did was because 1. they were in the heart of their own element. 2. Gareth is super good at magic. 3. Gareth is a fae and thus can use the magic from the environment rather than exhausting his own. 4. Rann was also an arcane dragon so it all matched rather well.
Rann is ofc. happy because having the brains of a tundra is like being enclosed in a glass box and not realizing it."
