It's better to make the background as well instead of using a photo. It will make it look better if the textures and style are consistent instead of all over the place.

Not always. Personally I feel it's better to make the background yourself. Otherwise you end up like me and struggle with them later on. I avoided backgrounds for the longest time and now I struggle to do them. It's better to start early and work on backgrounds along side your foreground images so you don't have problems later on.
