UMSAuthorLava — Super Smash Bros. 4 Character Theories

Description (EDIT 2) (7-14-2015) Okay...I'm disabling future comments because SOME people don't seem to notice how old this is. This was made before Ike was confirmed. MONTHS before DLC was even started. Hell, it was a time when everyone wanted Miis to have EVERY SINGLE MOVE customizable from ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS instead of having three set fighter archetypes. Okay? Opinions for DLC have changed quite a bit, so be on the lookout to my YouTube channel for that.

(EDIT) Disregard what I said here about Ike and Miis. The three different Mii Fighters are only as customizable as any other character move-wise (praise be to Sakurai for that), and will only vary with sizes. It's currently unknown whether different-applied Miis (in one Mii Fighter type) will all have the same skill record or different ones. However, it's possible that they might have the latter, and that extra Miis will have to be saved into the game.

This is Mr. Author, presenting...this 32-minute-long Flash about characters in Smash Bros.! Woohoo!
(I'll...definitely do a different, easier format in the future. And topics on a smaller scale.)

Here, I give my reasoning on how many newcomers might be added, chances on veterans, and a few of whom I think might be possible.

I apologize for anyone's dreams getting crushed by my opinion, but I tend to be harsh when shelling out facts.

Fonts used are Super Mario Bros. Alphabet and Super Smash Font.

Oh, and Decapre belongs to Street Fighter (Capcom).

- Meta Knight isn't lighter and has no Sword Beam.
- Ice Climbers aren't in.

- Ganondorf doesn't use sword or magic in his general moves.
- Jigglypuff is in.
- Lucas isn't in.
- Wolf isn't in.
- Falco isn't very different.
- Ike is in.
- Snake isn't in.

- Paper Mario isn't in.

- Serperior isn't in.
- Ridley isn't playable.
- Takamaru isn't playable.

- Miis are playable.
- 3DS does handle custom moves.

Why does DK need a third newcomer when it just got one in the last game? Why does any series need a newcomer when it got one in the previous game? I really don't understand this logic. DK deserves a third rep, and Diddy was long overdue (can't even believe it took to Brawl). Did you know that even if you don't count spin-offs (Donkey Konga, Barrel Blast, Jungle Climber, etc.) There are still TEN DK platformers? If Star Fox can get three characters for having five games, I don't see why DK shouldn't for having double that amount of games. As for Yoshi, people don't request for a second rep because he doesn't really need one. There's also the tiny problem of the Yoshi series LACKING CHARACTERS. The only real choice is Kamek, and even then, he doesn't feel necessary. Also, I've seen loads of people request a second Wario rep.

King K Rool is overhyped? How dare people want the main villain of a franchise! How dare they want someone who would add so much to the game with his unique moveset potential! What could he possibly add; it's not like there isn't any fast heavyweights who rely on projectiles? And comparing the Kremling thing to Kihunters is very flawed. Kihunters are a recurring Metroid enemy. Meanwhile, Kremlings haven't been seen in a DK platformer since DK 64. Doesn't it seem odd to you to bring back an enemy that hasn't appear in a non-spinoff game since 1999?

I know it doesn't matter now, but I think it was pretty crass telling people to get serious about Miis and talking about how they won't work (especially considering a giant snake with no arms apparently can). They were one of the most obvious newcomers for Smash 4. And also doesn't matter now, but Ike was not like Roy's situation, as Ike is the only Lord besides Marth to be the star of more than one game, giving him significance to the Fire Emblem franchise.

Also, this video really needs a pause button. It was really inconvenient having to back to the main menu and rewatching segments just to read certain parts (sometimes the text disappears too fast).

Watching this after E3 was hilarious, especially the end XD Also it helps that it's like 1 in the morning. Joking aside, this was really good. You made a lot of good points and everything made pretty good sense. Gotta say some of it is hard to swallow though, gonna miss Jigglypuff if she is cut. Also, do you not put any faith in Crystal coming in for Star Fox? I was really expecting you to talk about her, but then nope. While unlikely, for Star Fox, I'd have Fox, Crystal, and Wolf, but ya, unlikely. Glad you were wrong about Ike though, he was one of my favorites from Brawl ^.^

another fact about Shulk being in smash is that E3 2014 is on June 10 which is the same day Xenoblade Chronicles was released in Japan, and sense reveals mostly happen on the day character's game got released i assume Shulk will probably get revealed on the day of E3, but that's my speculation

Oh. I thought you were implying that Mewtwo was a she to begin with.

Speaking of, overall, great list. It was very well thought out. I still don't think Ridley will get in, and I have no plans of playing the Xenoblade Chronicles either, so I'm unsure of Shulk, but overall, it was very well reasoned. I personally think Mii could probably get in, but with a moveset of its own. The palette swaps could simply be other Miis and in Mario Kart Wii it simply divided them into three classes. They don't need to be customizable.

Bradflakes [2014-05-16 03:11:55 +0000 UTC]

This was quite a through and well made analysis on fighter predictions.

I'd like to offer my two cents on this.

First off, I don't think this will have more newcomers than Brawl did, considering Sakurai expressed that he wanted to focus on fine tuning existing veterans rather than adding in more combatants.  After all, quality over quantity.  I expect there to be no more than 48 in the final roster.  It's almost two years old, but here's the source for what I just said www.officialnintendomagazine.c… .

While it would make for a nifty entry, I myself see the inclusion of Serperior as extremely unlikely.  Just because Brawl had a grass started doesn't necessarily mean it's mandatory for the upcoming installment.  To me, Greninja is a perfect contrast to Charizard, emphasizing speed over strength and of course being a clash between the dueling elements of fire and water.  While it doesn't deconfirm Serperior, don't forget that Snivy will be a Pokeball summon if the opening to the most recent reveal trailer is anything to go by.

To me, I honestly could care less at this point whether or not the likes of Mewtwo and Ridley are a part of the finished product, especially in the latter's case.  After thinking about it a bit more, I don't really see anything new the leader of the space pirates can bring to the table, since all the newcomers so far seem unique.  On top of that, scaling him down would just take so much away from what makes him intimidating, which in the end is a large defining trait of his.  Besides, we already have a winged fire breathing reptilian like creature anyway.

There hasn't been a limit set on how many reps a single franchise can have, but I honestly feel that five is a good enough limit.  I mean sure the likes of Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon are the big N's top flagship series and make a lot of money, but that might seem unfair to the rest of them.  We don't want people to start deriding this for being something like Super Smash Pokemon Bros.  Yes I agree with Paper Mario and Girahim in that they would be most welcome to the team, but I feel anything over five might be just a tad excessive.

Finally, I do not see why so many fans are clamoring for Mii to be included.  What you said is absolutely true in that they might become a programming nightmare, but I feel that Mii's don't fit well with what Super Smash Bros is all about.  These titles are about bringing together fictional Nintendo icons and all-stars into one single setting that we've always dreamed of pummeling and fighting as for the most part, not some customizable avatar who looks like some random real life person.  At least it's not like those who delude themselves into believing Squirtle and Ivysaur a chance without seeing the countless reasons that are against them.

That's all I've got to say on the matter.

UMSAuthorLava In reply to Bradflakes [2014-05-16 15:17:54 +0000 UTC]

29 (currently revealed) + 6 (definite) + 5 to 8 (remaining veterans, assuming up to 3 more cuts) = 40 to 43, before others newcomers

And even if there's just 9 more newcomers to be shown, that'd mean a roster of 49-52. Somehow, I have doubts on just 48.

"Ohhh, Miis are playable in just about every Mario sports game these days, so they HAVE to be in Smash!" ...That might be why.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bradflakes In reply to UMSAuthorLava [2014-05-17 05:05:41 +0000 UTC]

Considering we're getting closer to the release date of the 3DS version, I personally do not think nine more newcomers will be revealed.  Nintendo might surprise us at E3, but that amount to me is a bit pushing it.  I'd be perfectly fine if they are six more they will unveil to us which would round out the newcomer total to twelve in all.  Which is still quite an impressive amount if you think about it.  All in all, I'll be satisfied either way for what the final product delivers unto us, considering that this is easily my top most anticipated game of this year.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UMSAuthorLava In reply to Bradflakes [2014-05-17 15:18:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, not ALL of the characters will be shown before the 3DS release, true. There'll still be some to be shown publicly afterward.

Never thought I'd see something like this on DA!  Good video!

I really like Serperior and her other evolutions, so I wouldn't mind her as a playable character.
In fact, one other thing that might get her in Smash (...which is relatively small...) is her appearances in the Poke-anime, especially her last one in the champions league. Not that I watch the anime anymore, but yeah!

...One other thing I would like to ask you though, Author...

....What are your thoughts on RAYMAN?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UMSAuthorLava In reply to C-Studios [2014-05-15 12:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Rayman? I kinda gave up on him after Ubisoft betrayed Nintendo's trust with Rayman Legends.

See, it was originally going to be released earlier as a Wii U exclusive. Then, all of a sudden, they push the release date further just to make it multi-plat.

So yeah, that's a harsh betrayal on Ubi's part.

C-Studios In reply to UMSAuthorLava [2014-05-15 16:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Still, the Wii U is the best version by far. And that version is exclusive in Japan.
There are plenty of other positive reasons, but there's always a big one that bugs me;

Rayman was made in France, not Japan. <: (

I don't want Miis to have customization movesets either. They should have their own movesets, like using each weapon from each streetpass game. At least it would resemble the Find Mii stage.

xXxSweetThornxXx In reply to UMSAuthorLava [2014-05-14 16:30:41 +0000 UTC]

Well they do have different magic depending on the color, that should at least have a chance. Kinda like when Olimar uses each of his pikmin that carrys different elements.

UMSAuthorLava In reply to xXxSweetThornxXx [2014-05-14 17:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Suppose you were to play a Mii in a different color than you usually play (be it from Random or from being in a certain Team). Just suppose that for a moment.

And factors like form-changing and randomness are what lead to inconsistent skill records, likely a reason they were cut from fighters in SSB4. You think any other inconsistent skill record factors would be allowed?

xXxSweetThornxXx In reply to UMSAuthorLava [2014-05-14 19:01:41 +0000 UTC]

They don't really need to have different speed and power depending on the height and weight. They'll all just have the same medium height and weight. Just to make it simple.

UMSAuthorLava In reply to xXxSweetThornxXx [2014-05-14 19:53:17 +0000 UTC]

Also realized something else.

Notice in the Smash Direct, when it shows the Find Mii stage? Its icon is a crown. That's not really universal to all things Mii-based, just Find Mii. If there was a playable Mii, that stage would have...some kind of emblem that relates universally to Miis. A...basic Mii face...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXxSweetThornxXx In reply to UMSAuthorLava [2014-05-14 19:59:46 +0000 UTC]

The emblem doesn't really matter. What matters is who is involved in that game.

Find Mii and the Tomodachi stage seem to both be the closest to Mii-series stages. So do you suggest that the Tomodachi stage will have the same emblem as the Find Mii stage now?
