Oh my god I'm in love!! This is the sort of thing I strive so hard to convey in my art, but always fail miserably at.

You know what I really love about this one... it's not just a concept it's a moment. So many tried to make "terrifying" pieces and it all seemed so contrived for shock. In this you've captured a beast that has the potential for being terrifying in a calm moment. You've added another little guy there which lends to the reality that even in this brave new world there are perhaps creatures that were created and became obsolete but continue to "live." Like any real world would have. This is the only piece I have seen that not only followed the rules (though the "common" items thing is loosely followed) but took the whole concept to a higher level. Not just "adding a bg" like so many (including myself) did. But making an effort to capture a moment in time in this whole world. Your piece more than any other makes me wonder about the world/story as a whole.

My advice... design your own world around this moment and write a story. This is book cover worthy.

well thank you very much Spirit, if there's one thing I always appreciate it's when someone takes the time to tell me what one of my pieces means to them.

You pretty much got exactly what I was going for regarding the mood. One additional layer that probably isn't immediately obvious is that the flock of birds in the distance are meant to be natural animals, which are such a rarity in this world that the creatures often take pause when they see some. So that's the moment I captured..the fleeting moment of contact between the natural and artificial world..

and of course it's fun to draw piles of junk.

As for the house-hold stuff, yea I was thinking that playground equipment is fairly ubiquitous, and would be commonplace in backyards everywhere. Looking at the finalists it doesn't look like they were too concerned about that qualifier anyways.

I invite you to check out my blog with some of my previous works which I hope you will enjoy:

Wow.. I am loving the design and background. The beast looks put together well and the background has so much detail in it. Tons of things to look at, and the colors bring it together. Love it!
