Description This little girl was sitting across the row from me as I talked with another gentleman about various topics. She stared at me the whole time, never moving. Just blinking. I smiled, took a photo, and she smiled back.

I love the DOF in this, it give the subject such clartiy without going over the top, really great. Your subject matter is also excellent, kids always make photography a more interesting!

this is so cute! i absolutely love her eyes... they show both shyness and curiosity... or just...kinda sneekiness. and its all captured so well! i love how the ppl in the background are blurred as well, it just enphasizes (sp? jeje) even more on the little girl ^^

Sorry for coming into this so late. I just joined DeviantArt and have been browsing past DDs. I really like the "captured moment" you obtained here. I'm curious... Do you ever get any grief for taking photos of unsuspecting people, particularly their children, in public? I enjoy taking pictures in public and often see opportunities that I pass up for fear of getting people needlessly riled up.

Thank you for the compliment. I'm flattered you even took the time to ask. I get some people who get irritated, and I've even had a guy spit on me. But the cold hard truth is, if you're in a public place, people have no real expectation to privacy. Because of this you can take a photo of a stranger without permission, however you can't publish it unless it's for a newsworthy purpose (Such as a flood victim, people at a breast cancer walk, etc.) With this particular photo, I happened to be working. I was the paid photographer for a 50th anniversary gala, and this little girl was a guest. So I didn't have any problems with her parents, as they were friends of the bride/groom's family and knew I was the dude taking photos. I recommend using rolls of film with low exposure counts (i.e. 12 exp. rolls) for street stuff, so if someone threatens to kick your ass you can give them some photos without sacrificing hours worth of work.

Don't hold back when shooting photos of strangers. Odds are, they either won't care, or won't care enough to confront you about it. I've even had some people that were happy to have their photo taken (but they're a rarity, believe me), especially younger people. Shoot first, ask later. If it works for the Marines [insert laugh here] , it'll work for you.

Barely-Legal [2005-06-25 07:48:50 +0000 UTC]

That's so cute - the fact that she smiled back at you and allowed you to take her photograph. I remember what it was like when I was that age and was bored out of my mind at a family dinner out at some fancy restaurant. My sister and I usually ended up playing underneath the table with everyone's shoes.

You've really managed to capture an essence of innocence, naivety and, of course, shyness in this photo. I like the fact how the little girl kept her mouth, nose and most of her facial identity hidden, but allowed for you to see her eyes and wasn't ashamed when you caught her looking at you. She's obviously a very curious little girl and you've really served her justice in your photo.

I think that it's easier to take pictures of kids because they don't worry about why some strange person is taking photos of them.

Looking through DA's DDs today, and this was the only one that really caught my eye.
I like the pose, especially the angle of her chair. Although it hides most of her body, you still get a small glimpse. I also like the chair itself, which lends a nice feel to the picture. Great piece. She's gorgeous.

So cute a scene.

Little ones are amazing and are so hard to really portrait somehow.
You did it well here, we can see there was communication between you too, at least in minds, spending time at a maybe boring dining table...

Really interesting.
