Its not that is a What if about shipping, its a What if about them growing up.
at the time zuko and mai were togather, so exacctly 12 years later they still were, and they have a kids

even if zutara does happen now I don't care i got what I wanted a Maiko kiss now I am content. If Zutara happens I will respect it(being a former zutara shipper, it would probably make me squee a bit). I guess all I want now is for Ty Lee to beat up Azula!
