Description The Order of the Teutonic Knights were some bad dudes. This is my fantastical/demonized representation of one such individual.

Here's a (very) basic rundown:

In the Early 1400s the Teutonic Knights were grown from the Holy Roman Empire (in present day Germany), and funded by the Polish, in an effort to destroy the Pagan presence in the Baltic. The Knights ended up raping, pillaging and slaughtering women and children throughout Poland and Lithuania. The Poles said "Eh.. shit my bad", joined forces with the Lithuanian army, and eventually defeated the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.

The Knights have been used extensively throughout history as both a symbol of military might and as a symbol of barbarism (depending on which country was pushing the propaganda...)

They were reformed and are now one of the best fraternities in Europe for traditionalists.

I love the Teutonic Order for the irony. Crusaders, yet they wore horned helmets harkening to a demonic appearance instead of a holy one.

NO GUIZ WE'RE TOTES HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS, SERIOUSLY.

Well this drawing is right! Teutonic knight burned down entire villages (Estland, Livonia, western Lithuania), killed thousand peoples (burned down entire castle with all its residents) And many other cruel acts, but this strengthen and let Lithuania to become biggest nation in medieval Europe...

Actually the only demonic thing about the order was what they did to those who refused to become christians. And many teutonics did it because they were forced to kill, lest they themselves be considered pagans. Many were reluctant, many were greedy, and most were full of religious fervor. To accuse ALL teutonics of being guilty is as "barbarian" as their deeds. Besides, in those days, the entire continent was being ripped apart by religous wars. There were even bigger slaughters of christians by muslums, for the same exact reason. To punish the many for the deeds of the few is unfair.

My grandfather is Lithuanian and he was alive during world war two and after he passed away we found a check point pass that his father used during the Nazi occupation. He came over to america after the war after living in a refugee camp. The knights were bad but it was it happened over five hundred years ago I dislike them but I don't wish any malicious to them.

Oh man, these comments, what did I walk into? I never heard anything about them killing pagans. The Teutons seemed better than the Templar from what I've read. It's like everyone has a completely different view of their history on here. From what I've read they were viewed as good or neutral, just regular people more or less of the time period. Do you have a link to sources talking about them in the Baltic killing pagans? I've never read about that before, same with them being in Lithuania.

just your basic medieval religious bloodshed

"Some of them campaigned against pagans to obtain remission for their sins, while others fought to gain military experience.

Warfare between the Order and the Lithuanians was especially brutal. Non-Christians were seen as lacking rights possessed by Christians. Because enslavement of non-Christians was seen as acceptable at the time and the subdued native Prussians demanded land or payment, the Knights often used captured pagan Lithuanians for forced labor. The contemporary Austrian poet Peter Suchenwirt described treatment he witnessed of pagans by the Knights:

Women and children were taken captive; What a jolly medley could be seen: Many a woman could be seen, Two children tied to her body, One behind and one in front; On a horse without spurs Barefoot had they ridden here; The heathens were made to suffer: Many were captured and in every case, Were their hands tied together They were led off, all tied up β€” Just like hunting dogs.[23]

It was a total war in every sense of the word. Lasting for more than 200 years, having its front line along the river Nemunas (with as many as 20 forts and castles only between SeredΕΎius and Jurbarkas, strip of about 45 km) and 10–50 km buffer zone, stretching on the both banks, absolutely desolated wasteland. This struggle was so deeply etched into Lithuanian culture and mentality that even now it is probably the biggest source of national pride and self-identity."

It's ironic that Lithuania is more Christian now than Germany. Wonder what they'd say if they saw the world today, if they would have any regrets or not.

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't get historical information from pop culture. Because they fuck it up and you start sounding like a moron.

In Summer of 1308, a Pomeranian rebellion in the city unseated the small forces loyal to WΕ‚adysΕ‚aw I the Elbow-high, who later would become King of Poland present there since 1306, and allied with Waldemar of Brandenburg who entered the town, but not the castle which was held by a small garrison loyal to the king. They, and the city's Pomeranian judge and castellan, Bogusza, on the advice of the Dominican prior Wilhelm, appealed to the Teutonic Knights in Prussia for assistance.

The Knights, led by Heinrich von PlΓΆtzke (and a relative of Gunther von Schwarzburg of the same name) agreed to aid Bogusza, and were to garrison the town for a year. A force of 100 knights and 200 supporters arrived at the castle around August; the Brandenburgers lifted the siege without any combat. The rebellious inhabitants, who supported the Brandenburgers, however, remained opposed to the Polish-Teutonic takeover. In September, the Teutonic Knights, together with the Polish garrison, begun their own siege of the city. Soon, however, tensions rose, as both sides vied for control; eventually the Polish knights with Bogusza left the town, leaving the siege under Teutonic Knights control.

Cool picture but as a Military Historian the interpretation popping up in the discussion is rather... unsettling. It basically follows the clichΓ© Polish Nationalistic view of the Order. (which tends to be very blind to the flaws, mistakes and wrongs committed by the Polish in that period)

Not a troll, but im rather bothered by the need from people to be apologetic for things that happened over 500 years ago and even worse comparing it to now, i realize that it was not your intention, but as a rather stuck up historian i couldnt help myself, calling them bad is just as unfair to them as calling the old pagans heathen demons.
No harsh feelings and i hope you understand.
