Gaius Julius Caesar becomes proconsul of the Roman provinces of Gallia Cisalpina, Illyricum and Narbonensis (Provincia or Gallia Transalpina), giving him command of four Roman legions, to which he adds two more – Caesar moves north from Narbonensis into Gallia Celtica to stop an ongoing mass migration of the Helvetii – June/July: Caesar defeats the Helvetii in the Battle of the Arar and completely obliterates them at the Battle of Bibracte – The Suebi under Ariovistus invade from the east, giving Caesar an excuse to continue his campaign – September: Caesar defeats the Suebi of Ariovistus – Caesar sends his troops to winter quarters among the Sequani before returning to Gallia Cisalpina for his administrative and judicial duties
