Description Hey, I just met you and this is crazy.

You're my quest.

Marry me, maybe?

I watched a video of the premiere of Sing and Matthew McConaughey revealed that his character Buster Moon would be singing bars of β€˜Call Me Maybe.' It gave me the idea of rewriting the lyrics to suit the Kubo universe

Awwwwww!!! This really sweet!!! Oh my gosh I love the way both Hanzo and Sariatu look in this; I kinda squealed at the sight of this picture and the modified verse of "Call Me Maybe"... Holy cow I'm dying Great work, as always

No problem! And I can see why! It's over-the-top sweet!!! I hate to say it, Hanzo and Sariatu are kinda my OTP XD

I love them too. They're the best on screen couple I've seen in recent years.

That verse in the description, though... Are you trying to kill me? xD

I'm not at all a fan of the original song, but this is great. This just made my day.

It was not my intention. xD

I'm not a fan of the song either, but since McConaughey is going to sing it, I had to to find a way to make it pleasing in some way, and so I wrote those 'deadly' lyrics.

Speaking of, what are your impressions of 'Sing'? Do you think that, overall, it will do well? I'm still doubtful, but I'm going to watch it nonetheless out of curiosity. McConaughey has a part in it, after all. And I'm also a fan of Scarlet Johansson.

I think it will do well. (It already has nearly 70 out of 100 on Metacritic.)

There's songs, big name actors and animals. Three very appealing things to adults and children alike. McConaughey is in it, so it's a must watch for me. I'm also curious to hear Scarlet's singing voice and on a side note, Reese Witherspoon (the voice of the mother pig) is in it, making the movie a sort of Mud reunion between McConaughey and her. Plus there's Taron Egerton who was one of the runner ups for the casting of young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse. So singing Cyclops!

Crazy that you mention Mud of all films, I just re-watched it yesterday. It's one of McConaughey's films that I'm particularly fond of. Sam Shepard was pretty good in it, too. My nephew thought McConaughey was really cool in Reign of Fire, which I showed him last month. ^^

By the way, have you seen The Sea of Trees? If you don't know it, it has Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe. And some of it was filmed directly on Mt. Fuji. That alone makes me enjoy it in particular, because I've been to some of the precise locations that they shot the film at. (Technically, I stood there several years before McConaughey did, but it counts in my book.)

Oh! I'm so glad you're familiar with Mud (and that's a really well timed coincidence.)

Oh! No, I haven't seen it, but that's so cool that you were there.

Why is the rating for the film so low? When I looked through Matthew's entire filmography, I overlooked the movie because of the score, but I really enjoyed the trailer just now

The Sea of Trees is definitely underrated. Personally, I evaluate movies myself rather than let numbers judge for me. Rotten Tomatoes and other sites, IMDB included, have given some very bad scores to tons of really good movies. [Usually], it has to do with box office results. Even some Disney movies have received such unfair treatment. Look at Treasure Planet and Atlantis, for example. They're two of my personal favorite Disney films, yet both bombed at the box office. Instead, people will praise the likes of Secret Life of Pets and The Angry Birds Movie, and both are okay at best. One's a Toy Story rehash with pets, the other's based on a phone app...

As my mother so aptly puts it: The masses are asses.Β Both of my parents usually have well-thought things to say, and they certainly gave me an earful (of good things!) after I managed to get them into the same theatre auditorium with Kubo and the Two Strings.

We have the same two personal favourite Disney movies

"One's a Toy Story rehash with pets, the other's based on a phone app..." Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha xD

How did you pitch Kubo to them?

CTSael In reply to Undreamtstories [2016-09-23 05:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Really?!Β  Β

Funnily enough, my dad found out about the movie from across the house. He heard the amazing orchestral cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (I was re-watching the trailer for the millionth time due to overhype), and he literally came running to find out where it was coming from and why. It alone was enough for him, but then the scenario of him uncertain what stop-motion was came up and I explained how it was made and that this was a stop-motion film. The 'stop-motion conversation' regarding Kubo came up again later with my mom and my response was, "Remember Coraline? That's stop-motion and these are the SAME creators." That's how I pulled them in, at least.

I'll never forget their very first impressions from actually watching the film. My mom whispered to me during the beginning, "Whose voice is that?" regarding Sariatu. I told her Charlize Theron. Fifteen minutes later, "Now whose voice?" during the evening scene inside the whale carcass. I told her who it was. I caught her occasionally passing me shifty glances from that point on, I could tell she was suspicious about the impending twist. Then during the third act with Hanzo, she said, "I was wondering that about him, due the mother's reveal."

My dad, of course, was completely straightforward about it. We walked out of the theatre and he was silently pondering about it, so I asked him what he thought. He paused a moment, then said simply, "Those witches were bitches." Words of wisdom, father. Truly. xD

Yes!
That's amazing that a song was so good it sold the movie for your father.

The thing about the shifty glances made me chuckle.

"Those witches were bitches." I exploded with laughter when I read that.

Reading that entire comment and thinking about what the movie would be like through their eyes made me happy, and it was like I was experiencing those twists again for the first time (the power of empathy...)

Indeed, my father is very well-versed in the language of simplicity. Even with his MD. Sure, he can be eloquent when he wants to or needs to be. Simpler talk just works so much better with our kind of family humor. A lot of that stems from having the knack for quoting movies, shows, etc. at the merest of whims. (Speaking of, I've been able to brush up on my quoting capabilities regarding Kubo. I could probably deliver almost any dialogue perfectly at this point.)

I agree with your perspective comment, parents certainly take away from films (even animations) something much different than what their kids did. I remember watching an interview with Theron and McConaughey in which they offered their impressions of the film in regards to being parents themselves, and comparing to what their own children thought of the film.

"Speaking of, I've been able to brush up on my quoting capabilities regarding Kubo. I could probably deliver almost any dialogue perfectly at this point." I'm so happy to hear that! (Are you still up to viewing number five?)

Pop quiz time! Recite your favourite Moon King quote from the third act!

I love those parts of interviews. I also heard that McConaughey read the film's script to his kids as bedtime stories and that he quoted Beetle in different ways to gauge their reactions. A very efficient way of testing the material he's working with.

Kubo: "No, you're wrong. Not infinite. All stories have an end."
Raiden: *menacingly* "Is that right? And how does thissss story end?"
I love the fact that he adds in that disgruntled hiss, like the monster inside was so ready to jump out. It just gives me the impression that he was building up to a fight the entire time, as though he expected to not win his grandson over.

Yeah, I know the interview you're talking about. He also didn't tell his kids why he was saying the things he did, wanting to wait until the movie's release for them to know that he was taking part in it.

I overlooked the hissing, so thank you! I also liked the suffer their weakness, humiliation etc speech (was the third word suffering?) and how Kubo practically scoffs at him and says "That's how your story goes."

It also seemed like he was goading him into fighting when he says (quoting from junior novel) "Is this what you want? To do battle with the hideous monster that ruined your life?"

Raiden: "You want to be human?! Then share their weakness. Suffer their humiliation. Feel their pain!"

Oh, you've read the junior novel, too? I bought it for an initial read, then thought that it would probably make a good gift for my nephew. The limited quotes that it does have are pretty spot on, though.

Thanks for the complete quote, my brain approximated the word pain to suffering.

I haven't read all of it. Only samples from the internet, but the quotes are spot on as you say.

(You're right, it would make a good gift for him.)
