Description Question: How many people were aware that EDGE magazine is doing a cover on Silksong in February? I figured this out a few days ago. Apparently it was leaked.

Anyway, I've been struggling to draw something cool for Hollow Knight for a bit, and I liked Hornet's pose in the cover. I was originally going to re-draw the whole thing, but then I realized how many flowers I'd have to draw... so I drew a pillar for an hour instead.

...I mean, I'm not complaining. Look at this. This looks better than I thought it would.

I welcome critique and constructive criticism!

Her cloak billows heavily around her, and she holds her needle behind herself. From somewhere off to the right is a yellow-orange light source that could be the sun. The sun reflects brilliantly against the clouds she stands over. End ID.]

I offer commissions on Ko-Fi, as well!

Thank you very much for the critique! I really appreciate it!

I took heavy inspiration from this pose from the Edge magazine cover for Silksong, which I've linked in the description. I feel like I did a great enough job capturing the general vibe that the cover was able to have. I didn't notice the thread tied to the needle in the cover so I didn't incorporate it in the piece, but that's definitely something I'll keep in mind if I do something like this in the future. I think that the thread being seen as tied to the needle would also be dependant on the lighting, so that's a good thing to bring up and keep in mind going forward.

I was a little bit confused about what you meant in reference to the needle being straighter since I used the straight line tool for it, but when I took a closer look, I saw what you mean. The blade doesn't line up properly with the handle, and that wasn't something that I noticed until you brought it up. That's another thing that I'll have to keep in mind for future pieces of art, and I appreciate that being brought up!

I like the flower petals, too, though in hindsight, I wonder if they should have been incorporated, as well. There's no source for the flower petals to have come from unlike the reference picture. Composition-wise I do think something was necessary to fill in the empty space further, though I do wonder if I could have chosen something more fitting considering.

One other thing that I should mention is that Hornet is intended to be standing above clouds, not fog, though I suppose that it isn't thick enough to be seen as clouds. It was the last thing that I added into it for the most part, so I was loathe to put a lot of effort into it after all the time I spent on it. I think the results still look good, don't get me wrong, but the cloud aesthetic was probably lost in the process.

Another concern that I personally have for the piece is the spacing. I feel like the pillar takes up way too much space in the artwork and makes it very bottom-heavy, which distracts from the overall composition. The simple fix would be to either crop the image or give more space at the top over Hornet's head to compensate, but I didn't want to lose the effort put into the podium/pillar. Aside from that, again, I'd been working on it for a while, so while I was proud of it, I also wanted to get it over with.

Something else that I noticed that bothered me with my piece was that there are certain parts of the podium where the angle of some pieces doesn't seem to correlate properly. It's especially noticeable in the area in the middle around where Godseeker's face is, where design elements curve outward to the side. I really struggled with that design element in particular throughout the pillar, and I wasn't able to figure out how it worked. That's something I should probably look into practising in the future.

If there are any spelling or syntax errors, it's because I'm typing this from my phone. In any case, thank you again very much for this critique! I've been wanting to request critique for my art for a while now, but only recently figured out that DeviantArt has removed the critique option for whatever reason, and it's very upsetting. Have a Happy New Year, and Merry Critmas!

Since I was answering on mobile, I wasn't really able to see the pillar. The area I was thinking was beneath the Godseeker and kind of to the side... I'm bad at describing, to be honest.

It's sort beneath the Godseeker emblem. I'm referring to the ridges that split off to either side beneath where the majority of the detail is? It's on the bottom half of the column.

You should be proud of it, you made something amazing! Also don’t worry about how close to the top it is, frankly I didn’t even notice it till you pointed it out.
