Description
A large herbivorous iguanian lizard from the late Eocene of Myanmar.
It was known for having ridges along the mandible, thus naming “bearded king”. It was named by Head, the one who named Titanoboa. It was named after Jim Morrison, The Doors frontman who plays the epithet “Lizard King”. It has an acrodont dentition because the teeth were fused with the jaw. Phylogenetic analysis showed that it was closely related to Spiny-tailed lizards.
It inhabits dry tropical forests and lived alongside primates, artiodactyls and hyaenodonts. But surprisingly it was bigger than most of the contemporary terrestrial mammals, around 1 meters in length and 1.8 meters including the tail.
Illustrated mainly based on iguanas.
