Heart beating faster with each breath
Victory is life and failure means death
A flash of light with a hiss of steel
My blade a part I now can feel
I take my stance my guard held low
To make or take the fight's first blow
A blocked first cut a return slash
A missed parry gives a tiny gash
My opponent pleased with my pain
The first blood spilled but knowledge gained
Backhand, forehand, block and thrust
Lesson learned, in steel I trust
The sword and my arm joined as one
I will advance I will not run
A ringing parry, an answering stab
A cut for them to even the tab
The fighter launches a swift reply
The beautiful music of this duel's a lie
Overhand, underhand, stab and retreat
In combat and war fighters meet
This battle I wage no one can see
I fight myself, the opponent is me
