Description

Haven't done a meme in a while, so here I am with another one. As you can tell, this is a meme about moments (mainly movies) that really hit me where it hurt. Some of them, I avoided for a long time, and I can barely watch even now.

Of course, there are many more moments besides these, but these are the moments I can recall off the top of my head that strike a particular nerve.

 1. The ending to The Snowman. Probably everybody knows this ending by now, but that doesn't prevent the tears in your eyes, the burning lump in your throat, or that feeling in your stomach like you've just been punched hard.

2. The ending to Dot and the Kangaroo. The music alone will haunt you for days afterward.

3. The ending to the 1975 anime version of The Little Mermaid. Let's just say I'm very glad Disney did it the other way around. Sure, the 1975 anime is "more faithful" to the original story, but then I never liked Hans Christian Andersen's "make you cry and then make you feel guilty about crying" method. His writing style is nice enough, but sheesh, dude, lighten up!

4. Jess's first proper cry after losing his best friend in The Bridge to Terabithia. I saw that movie in the theater with some high school chums, and oh man, I never saw that part of the movie coming. (Never read the book beforehand, either.) That was about as close as I came to crying for real in a public place.

The only consolation is that Jess's dad, with whom he never got along too well, is the one to hold him and let him cry it out.

5. The frozen corpses from Titanic. Yeah, I don't care to dwell on that scene too much if I can help it. The fact that it's based on a true story, that real people had died in this fashion, doesn't help. I still haven't found the courage to watch the movie from start to finish again. I hardly have the stomach for YouTube clips.

6. Quasimodo crying over Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I'm glad that she wakes up and is okay (if only in Disney's version) but Quasimodo is one of those characters you just hate to see unhappy in any capacity. He's already been through so much and this is pretty much the last straw. At least here, he finally sees Frollo for what he really is, and in the words of TV Tropes, "The dog bites back."

7. Rameses and Moses falling apart for good in The Prince of Egypt. This is irrefutable proof that their brotherly bond is over, even though neither truly stops caring about the other. The haunting music and Moses's face both get me every time.

8. Spirit keeping watch over a near-death Rain in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. We could all guess how this would turn out, but I dare you to tell me this scene didn't choke you up to some degree or another.

9. The lonely centaurette in "The Pastoral Symphony" from Fantasia. The fact that I relate so well to her (being lonely and wondering if there's anybody out there for me) makes this hit further home.

10. Bambi learning about his mother's death in Bambi. Enough said.

11. Mufasa's death in The Lion King. Again, enough said.

12. Travis pulling the trigger on his best four-legged friend in Old Yeller. I felt exactly like him when I saw how bad Butterscotch was and I took it upon myself to call the vet. Picking up that phone was just like picking up that gun. Once it was done, there was no turning back.

13. Sulley scaring Boo in Monsters, Inc. Even if he didn't mean to, he sees for himself what it's really like to scare kids...and that it's a very, very bad thing. John Goodman couldn't have conveyed that surprise and remorse any better.

I plan to make Romulus like this when he lashes out at Reid for accidentally hurting Opal with his newfound magic. Sure, Romulus has good reason to be angry, Reid knows what he's done and regrets it big-time, and it's a good thing Opal recovers...but Romulus sees what he's done when he takes his anger a little too far. After all, the thing Reid fears most in the world is losing his uncle's love.

14. Sulley leaving Boo (supposedly) for good in Monsters, Inc. This became all the more poignant after losing Butterscotch: "Kitty has to go."

15. Louie crying in We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story. A lesser known and more low-key example than the others, but this scene hardly fails to choke me up, even now. He spends most of the movie acting like a "tough kid" but it turns out he's really quite vulnerable, and for me, the actor's "crying" is convincing enough.

Even the dialogue hits a bull's-eye: "Don't ruin everything 'cause you're mad or scared or something. It can't be all about that. Or what's life for? I know I act like I'm the original tough guy, but that's 'cause I'm scared, too!"

16. Héctor and Coco singing "Remember Me" together in Coco. As beautiful as it is, it's bound to wring tears from you like a wet towel, knowing what happens not long after, that this is the last time this little girl sees her papa in this life. Given that I'd lost my own dad two years before this movie came out...you get the idea. At least the song has been an amazing comfort to me, and I sing it to Dad's headstone from time to time.

17. Koda's reaction to what happened to his mother in Brother Bear. He's such a cute, plucky, slightly annoying cub that it'll break your heart all the more to see him utterly crushed. Eat your heart out, Bambi.

18. You might not see it too well, but that's the "cave painting" of Tumnus from Aslan's How in Prince Caspian. Because of this scene, I came dangerously close to not only not watching the movie at all, but also to abandoning the Narnia series altogether. It took me a long time to forgive C.S. Lewis as well as Disney and Walden Media for this, and even now, I'm still a little sore at them.

19. The pound sequence from Lady and the Tramp. Those poor dogs get me in the feels every time.

20. Rapunzel's parents mourning her absence in Tangled. They've spent 18 years without their daughter, without a clue as to where she is now (or whether she's even alive), and while they haven't lost hope, it's clear enough a little more of that hope slips away every year.

This scene will truly resonate with parents of kidnapped/murdered children. It's nothing short of brilliant how well the scene is played with neither character uttering a single word. To quote Ursula, "Don't underestimate the importance of body language."

21. Snape holding Lily in the film version of Deathly Hallows. I can talk for ages about all Harry Potter's soul-crushing scenes, film and book alike, but something about Alan Rickman "breaking down" really speaks to me. It was this entire sequence that convinced me to make Beowulf a "good guy," or more of an anti-villain. I would have chosen Alan Rickman for his voice, too.

22. "Someone's Waiting for You" from The Rescuers. The whole sequence speaks for itself.

23. Pinocchio's (temporary) death in Pinocchio. When I wrote The Guardian with Terence, I just had to include a tribute to this heartbreaking scene somewhere.

24. Tod left alone in The Fox and the Hound. He goes through an awful lot, but it's particularly depressing to see him "abandoned" in the wild (even if it was for his own good) and knowing his friendship with Copper is over. Widow Tweed was all he had left, and now he's left to feel like nobody wants him at all. He lost everything he ever knew and loved, and it shows.

While I think his relationship with Vixey is a bit on the silly side, at least he won't be so lonesome anymore, which makes it considerably more palatable.

25. "Alone in the World" from Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. Two things make this scene all the more tearjerking. One: we see why Ebenezer Scrooge is "alone in the world" and so we feel pretty sorry for him. His Freudian excuse, if you will.

And two: unless he changes his ways, he will stay alone, in both life and death. Both scenarios play your heartstrings like a guitar.

And that concludes this depressing meme. I promise, the next one will be considerably more uplifting.

Until next time, keep your chins up and know that somebody out there is thinking about you and loving you a whole lot.
