I was thinking he'd turn out to be a hit man or something, maybe having an abusive family or something in his past has just made him a heartless jerk

Well, if the search went on long enough without them finding Serenity the only thing that could happen would be Luke and Jason starting a fight with each other. In response I could picture Jason doing something he might regret. Maybe he wins the fight and winds up beating Luke to a pulp, or if he has a gun he may impulsively shoot Luke in self defense. Thinking he killed Luke he'd run off before cops would show up. He'd be a wanted man, and he'd have to turn to a life of crime.
