This is more or less how I envisioned Helga would look like if The Patakis spinoff had ever been made. Craig Bartlett's description of Helga at 15 was that she stubbornly kept her pigtails, still rocked a unibrow, and hid her pink bow underneath a cap. I know a lot of fan artists give her a baseball cap but I always figured it was a skull cap. ...Although Helga hiding her pink bow under a light blue baseball cap has some interesting symbolism to it. Heh.Perhaps I'll mess a little more with aging the characters. My HA! fan art up to this point has been about as canon as it gets, but I'd like to start branching out a little more.

The Patakis was an idea for a spin-off that Craig Bartlett had, about Helga and her family that takes place few years after "Hey Arnold". Craig pitched it to Nickelodeon and a couple other networks but it was rejected.

It's very tempting to want to draw Helga prettier, since she's not really that ugly to begin with (well, I don't think so), and in episodes like Arnold's Valentine and Dinner for Four we see how nice she can look when she wants too. I imagine even awkward teen Helga could clean up real nice on those occasions where she's forced to ditch the pigtails and hat.
I'd like to think that Helga wouldn't get so concerned over how she looks in high school. I see her despising the very idea of makeup and fashion and all that.
Yeah, I don't really see the unibrow going anywhere, although I defined it a little better here. Not only is it part of her "look" but it's the show's style in general... either that or Hillwood has a dire lack of tweezers and wax parlors, there's unibrows everywhere!

That´s a really interesting point you made, Kim - I should ponder about that, too.
I still try to not make her too fashionable, but I am aware that what I tried is quite too much still - as much I am aware that I´m not following the cartoon style at all; however, as I´m having a real good time drawing fanart.
I love to do it, more than the strictly commercial "cartoony" stuff I need to draw on advertising( but not shown here becuase I feel no personal fullfillment and satisfaction nor creative achievement on that, go figure ); in fact, that´s just an eventual cash business that doesn´t pay enough for the stressing effort( and even, for the struictly promotional or, at best, the utterly ridiculous "ideas" I need to put on images once asked by a client ), either.
So, as I do intend to draw her and other character for several other instances as teenagers, that´s a thingn to ponder about your points, indeed - so I´ll do that from now on.
Ah.
I´m sorry for mix on your conversation, but, as I wanted to see/study form your design once again( since I was already feeling that I should re-think my own ), I found this one running on.

Well, the great thing about fan work is that there really is no wrong way to draw them. Even Craig's descriptions aren't gospel; if he had the chance to make "The Patakis" right now he might make it completely different from his original plans. And fan art isn't required to be 100% true to canon anyway. Having fun is definitely the most important part! I really like how you depict Helga in your fan art.
I've drawn older Helga many times and this is probably the "ugliest," least fashionable version of her I've done yet. There are many possibilities for how Helga might look in the future. I hope in my earlier discussion I didn't make it sound like this is the only way she should look. I'll have to post my other Helga drawings sometime.

I like it, and I've also always envisioned her hiding the bow under a skull cap. Definitely looks like something Craig would do for The Patakis (may it rest in peace). I'm interested in seeing character designs for the rest of the cast.
I picture Bob as nearly bald from tearing out his own hair in frustration, and Miriam wearing one of those jogging pantsuits that old women are famous for.
And since MTV wanted to center the show around Olga, she would look like Paris Hilton, of course.
Kidding about that last part...I think.

She'd have to be a size 0 with boobs spilling out of her glittery baby tee with some sort of retarded cutesy message like "Too Hot 4 U" on it. And don't forget the little shiny purse with a toy poodle stuffed into it because that's so adorable.
I don't know why...Miriam always ends up looking like my mom, in my head. Probably because my own mom looks somewhat like Miriam (minus the booze and blender).

if that ever happened - and thank goodness that "The Patakis" hadn´t for MTV either, if may I say so... considering the actual stomach required to watch more than 30-seconds of MTV average scheduled audience and the brilliant acting of their VJs, as much their, ahem, intelligence, I wouldn´t be surprised to see MTV producers turn her turned into something just alike that!

Thanks, I was trying to keep her as close to an awkward, angry teenager as I could. All my past sketches of her were pretty idealized, but I don't think Helga will "blossom" until after she goes through the suck of being a teen. And I think she'll always look a little different, it's part of why I like her character.
