Description
At the very center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, sits a dark, swirling Black Hole. Like most large galaxies, the super-massive object is like the core, the "heart" of the galaxy. It keeps the inner region stable with its immense gravity, and occasionally absorbs so much matter it turns into a quasar; blasting out so much radiation and material that it heats up and expels much of the gas in the core of the galaxy and temporarily stunting star formation. We're at a great enough distance from the center though that the last time this happened, about 6 million years ago, life on Earth was mostly unaffected, save for having a HELL of a light-show in the sky and maybe even more spectacular auroras at the poles from the increased cosmic ray levels.

Right now Sagittarius A Star, is it's called, is relatively calm, but none the less has some incredible amounts of energy swirling around its accretion disc, with the gas and dust orbiting close in moving so fast it heats up to millions of degrees, and the astrophysical jets at the poles, while not "quasar" level active, still eject particles in both directions near the speed of light for thousands of light-years.

Like all black holes, the warping of space-time it causes is so intense that light is bent around it like a lens. This effect is called "gravitational lensing." Because of this, things behind the black hole can be seen in front, hence the illusion of the "double-rainbow" effect of the accretion disc on the back-side.
