I love the T-70 design. More compact and sleek in my opinion.

cool... makes sense as while the design is similar they are actually some diferent to the old T-65 .. nearly same as the T-65 is different from the Z-95 (there were some Z95 variants with 4 s-foils , like Booster Terrik's .. obviously non canon)

Difficult. I grew up with the EU and in one fell swoop it's... well, not gone, but relegated to almost an AU!!

I guess I can live with both as long as they don't really screw it up. They've made a decent start with REBELS.

BaronNeutron In reply to unusualsuspex [2015-06-02 04:40:11 +0000 UTC]

my only issue so far with Rebels was the idea that Stormtroopers are trained since childhood.  LOL!!!  Poor finished products for 10 years of training!  But yes Rebels is good.

I just wish people would stop saying "well but in the books or comics or games"....NO!  They are gone!  There will be nothing in the new film from them!!!

Just goes to show really the Republic would of won in a war against the Empire. Even if the Empire has the numerical superiority, Republic has superior trained soldiers(which only a third made it into the Stormtrooper corps), the Venator is backed up by loads of ARC-170s which will even the odds against Imperial/Imperator class superior firepower, Empire somehow depended a lot on the Emperor's force powers or something like that.. I remember reading that everything fell a part for the Navy when the Emperor died for some odd reason.

That is because some sources say that The Emperor had several Acolytes use the Force power called Battle Meditation during Endor.

When the Death Star II blew, they went with it, the courage and coordination the Imperials felt was lost and they fell apart.

Also the fact that many high ranking Imperials became Warlords in the original canon helped the rebels as well.

Don't fall for it guys.  Its a ploy.  Disney is not that stupid.

One of two things will happen.
1. they claim EU is non-canon just so they can hide EU elements in the movie as the big "I am your father"-like surprise reveal
2. they never had any intention of keeping it outlawed, just waiting until the final moment and reversing it, making you all think you've won a victory.

Bottom line?  Stirring up controversy on purpose, to get more people talking.  You know what they say, controversy creates cash.

What you say is true, but what if they don't U-turn?

I have come to think of The Force Awakens as an AU, like the new Star Trek films.

This way, I can keep the original EU canon and enjoy the new story in the film.

Looking at what we have seen from episode 7 thus far, I do not see it being AU, as they have clearly taken great pains to reconstruct the sets and vehicles from the original trilogy.

As for if Disney doesn't U-turn.... all i can say is, they cannot possibly be that stupid.  But, as an AU Jim Gordan from Batman once stated "... but I've been wrong before"

Have learned that Disney was only given the Star Wars licence if they agreed to keep the events in the EU novels as canon.  As we have now seen, Disney has not kept their agreement.

It'll be interesting to see if Rogue One makes any changes to established canon, even though it's a direct prequel to Episode IV (changes to scenes already being made after lukewarm test screenings).

Keiichi-K1 In reply to anno78 [2016-07-14 05:33:30 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that may be what Rogue One is all about, to bring aspects of EU into the official canon, in an official form.  After all, there were several parts of EU in Force Awakens as well.  But not everything from EU can be accepted as is,... as some of it quite frankly sucks, lol.

anno78 In reply to Keiichi-K1 [2016-07-14 11:03:22 +0000 UTC]

I agree, but they could have kept the Solo kids (Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin), Mara Jade, the Vong War, and the Imperial Remnant.  The backstory would've been more interesting.

Though the Vong War would mean no Chewbacca.

See, as with all things, once fans get involved, you have to take into perspective that once actual production begins again, some of what you liked from the fanfic realm (whether accepted by the parent company or not) is going to be changed, or removed, in order to suit the primary narrative that the license holders are trying to create.  And personally,... I am overjoyed that we are actually GETTING Star Wars again (and decently entertaining Star Wars at that), and that there are plans for the near future.

Disney have announced that if this trilogy does well, there will be Episodes X, XII, and XIII, and possibly more.
And they've also started casting for the Han Solo film (which may contradict Rebels storylines), and the live action series may go ahead.

Well, considering Rebels is a Disney creation, they may very well keep it stable.  Besides, the Star Wars universe is vast.  The events of one character do not have to intersect or contradict with another's.

anno78 In reply to Keiichi-K1 [2016-07-18 09:44:45 +0000 UTC]

Let's hope Disney decide to keep it stable, though A-Wings have already appeared in Rebels, way before the Alliance was meant to have them.

Lando has already appeared in Rebels, and the writers haven't written (no pun intended) out other original and prequel trilogy characters turning up.
We've already had Yoda, Leia, Bail Organa, C3PO, R2, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader.  And now scarred Mace Windu is set to return from the dead, with a guest appearence from Kenobi also on the cards.  Han and Chewie might not be far behind!

If Han and Chewie do appear in Rebels, Disney will have to be careful, as the Han Solo film is set before A New Hope, and the writers of the series and the film could end up having Han in two places at once.

I'm all for new Star Wars, but Disney might end up over doing it, and turning the franchise stale with too many stories in a short space of time (the live action series appears to be on again).

I beg to differ.  Star Wars NEEDS a constant influx of content, to build up its franchise.  After all, Star Trek was at its most popular when there were two series running simultaneously, one new one in the works, and films every two years.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

anno78 In reply to Keiichi-K1 [2016-07-19 08:27:27 +0000 UTC]

Star Trek was a franchise that began a a single TV series, that developed into a series of films, and five more TV series (with a sixth on the way).  Novels, comics, toys and games also emerged.

Star Wars started as a trilogy of films, which led to comics, toys, and a novel series that was produced by LucasBooks (and announced as canon).  There were also two animated series and best-selling games.  Three more films appeared (the prequels), as well as two more animated series (the Clone Wars cartoons).
Now a new trilogy has begun (which has voided the long running book series), alongside stand alone spin-off films (with a new trilogy already being planned) and the Rebels series.

Star Trek and Star Wars are two very different franchises, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.  I'm just worried that Disney is doing too much, too fast, and that could end up a bad thing in the long run.

Well, considering how hungry for Star Wars so many of us have been for so long, and how Disney hasn't made many mis-steps with the Marvel franchise thus far, I see only great things coming out of them with regards to Star Wars.

And lets also not forget, Disney has been involved in Star Wars since the very beginning, or rather Lucas has been involved with Disney.  Either way, there has been this respect since the very beginning, and I don't see them betraying that any time soon.  It just feels weird having a lot of Star Wars all of a sudden.  I am certain it felt just as strange when TNG began,... and lets not forget, many Trekkies had originally spoke negative of that as well.  They were proven wrong in the long run, and I feel Disney nay-sayers will be proven wrong as well eventually.

Don't confuse me for a Disney fanboy though, I am still forever bitter at them for how they treat traditional animation, and animators in general.  But with regards to live action, they have made a believer out of me.

I'm just a fan of Star Wars who hopes Disney can keep up this momentum they've started, whilst continuing to treat the franchise with the respect it deserves.

Well, Marvel has had almost relentless momentum for the last several years, and it hasn't gotten stale yet.  You can tell they're doing something right when they make a great superhero film, and its considered a letdown after the awesomeness that came before.  But then,... I think that can be attributed to two simple words.  Tony motherfrakking STARK, lol

Just seen trailer for Rebels Season Three (Grand Admiral freakin' Thrawn!!).

I just saw that too.  It also shows me that EU is not being abandoned, it is being added in a more official form a piece at a time.  And, something as robust as EU should be handled carefully and slowly.  Give it time.  As an old Jedi master once said... "PATIENCE!"

Reminds me a little of the Z-95 and a lot of one of Adam Kopala's designs. Maybe the Star Wars team saw his designs and decided to use them as inspiration or something.

Seems rather redundant though, the Z-95 was the predecessor to the ARC-170 and the X-wing. It be almost like a step backwards going back to the Z-95 design. I prefer XJ-Wing as a successor compared to this.

Majestic-MSFC In reply to SeraphimD-Kiryu [2015-06-01 03:43:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well the ARC-170 was way too advanced for the Clone War era imo. But I agree I think they could have done more with this design to differentiate it from the T-65 while at the same time making it look more advanced.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeraphimD-Kiryu In reply to Majestic-MSFC [2015-06-01 03:57:13 +0000 UTC]

ARC-170 really was a Strike Fighter rather than plain starfighter, I think it worked perfectly how they went larger from the Z-95 then streamlined the design into the X-wing after, so it works if you think of it that way. But a good starfighter design is the sort that can last for years after it's prime. It's like how people stuck to the X-wing despite the E-wing being made.

Majestic-MSFC In reply to SeraphimD-Kiryu [2015-06-02 00:44:03 +0000 UTC]

I like to think of it as an assault fighter myself, much like the B-wing in he original trilogy. Though I think all this is moot anyway. Both designs are considered cannon and here to stay.
