My biggest gripe the railguns line of sight is parallel to the hull and it cant fire fore and aft without hitting itself

The Sulaco is an troop ship and converted into an assault ship. As to whether or not they use the term Frigate. It is a frigate, the smallest independent operating naval element.

Too bad that game's storyline was so abysmally baaaad. I wanted the Sulaco's fate to be properly revealed after its ambiguous end in Alien 3 but refuse to consider ACM's storyline to be 'official'.
