Description More fiddlefarting around with weird and funky lighting.

I also used a number of textures in this one, as an experiment. Paper, smoke, water damage textures and so on just to give it an interesting edge.

I would die for an Optimal Optimus and a Primal Prime.  Just sayin'.

He's so pretty! I love the way his optics look, and the purple lighting.

Thanks! The lighting was tricky on this one, but I am glad it came out as well as it did.

I work in Photoshop, mostly.    When it comes to lighting a piece, I fall back on my 3D/FX training somewhat, regarding placing light sources and visualizing how the light falls across a shape.   The light itself is made of two different hues of purple, a very pale one, and a more saturated color.  The more saturated color is the bulk of the lighting, with the paler one for the hotspots.  Most of my light/highlight layers for this one were also set to the Hard or Vivid Light layer style, to create a more realistic interaction between the base colors and the lighting layers. For an example of the difference look at this one, vs my Breakdown portrait. On Breakdown I didn't use any layer styles, just the colors as they 'naturally' are.

On one of my next pieces, I've thought about putting together a tutorial series

Ah. I usually do Photoshop as well. Can't say I've had any 3D/FX training yet But that sounds like a good way of lighting something.

Tutorials would be nice. See how you make such pretty stuffs

When it comes to the 3D/FX thing, the most simple way to light something is with a key/main light which is the major light source, a fill light which comes in somewhat from the side and puts a bit of light in the areas the main light does not hit, and a backlight which comes in from behind to give even more definition.

Rampage has a key light (the purple light) and a back light ( the green), but not much of a fill light in the name of artistic license. Though if he would have had one, it would have come in from the left side of the image.  I just use the basic concept as a foundation to work out light sources and to visualize how things would be lit on some projects. Of course, converting a 3D technique to a 2D medium isn't a direct translation, but some of the ideas can be carried over and used as inspiration.

A tutorial will happen eventually! I need to draw some more line arts, then pick one to work with and go from there.

Makes sense. My lighting usually just comes from the right, and I don't give it much thought I should probably pay more attention to it.

He looks lovely with purple key light and green back light. Which direction does the key light come from?

Converting it sounds like you really need to be able to visualize what you're doing.

I'll be watching for it

Switching up lighting and being creative with it is one of the easiest ways, in my opinion, to really change how an image looks, and your light choice can change the entire mood of a piece. Using fancy lighting on some line art that I had begun to feel "meh" about (lots of little problems that I see now and sort of bug me), really made it pop and look reasonable again.

Rampage's key light comes in from the lower right, more or less. Imagine someone holding a flashlight on him from somewhere off the bottom right and that'd be about where the key light is coming from.

I get what you're saying. Taking a really well lit piece and making it all dark would really change the whole pic, no matter what it is.
I remember way back before I knew what lighting was, and I'd try and draw realistically. It never really worked out.

I see it, now that I'm looking again.

Thanks!  Dinobot is on the list, so he will turn up in this series sooner or later.
