I never thought of using a cracky-painty-like texture for a planet... It actually works pretty well. If I may, what's the term you search for to find that type of picture; if you did search that is.

It does look pretty good. My only suggestion is to give the planets a more powerfull shine by blending the sides of the planets which are lightened in the color of the sun. It usualy looks more realistic.
That aside, the textures and the nebula in the background do look cool, aswell as the truster flames of the ships
