Description I started working on this one before Christmas, but didn’t get around to finishing it until this week.

While doing my Christmas shopping I noticed that a lot of places had bags made of felt for sale. I decided I had to try it.

Using a stencil pattern for a tree made of holly leaves and berries, I created my front panel. I didn’t want to have to cut small felt circles out for the berries so again I used burgundy buttons. (Like I did with December Magnet – Holly [link] )

Felt in Olive and Sandstone was used to create the bag. Sandstone felt pieces made up the front, sides, and back of the bag, while olive was used for the front, bottom, and handle. The panels were blanket stitched together using 6 strand embroidery floss. The buttons were sewn on using metallic embroidery thread (gold) to just the sandstone front leaving the inside of bag free of the button stitching.

My bag was nowhere near as sturdy as the ones I saw in the stores as I had only used single layers of felt (exception being the front) for the panels. The bag I made would stand on its own, but limply (and that was before I added the handle). In an effort to give it some stability, I starched the bag. This seems to have helped.

If I were to remake this bag in the future I would use more layers of felt (like I did in the handle, there are four layers of thickness there) and possibly use plastic canvas between layers of felt to give the bag a better shape and stability.

Bag measures approximately 9 inches tall (not including handle), 7.5 inches wide, and 4 inches deep.

Hi! This looks really great! The design and accents are lovely.
They have many choices of fusible web/interfacing that would probably work for reinforcing this project. You could actually fuse the felt to the backing to make assmbly faster and just embellish with a decorative stitch. I would then line the inside of the bag with some other fabric and add a couple nifty pockets.

I recently bought some wool roving to try making my own felt. The handmade stuff is so beautiful.

Looks really nice!
Maybe next time, to reinforce the bag, you could use double layers of felt for the front and back. Then, before stitching it together, slide in a piece of cardboard, in between the layers. This technique is often used to strengten pieces of felt that need to stay in place or are large flat pieces.
Hope this helps you!

Thank you. At the moment I'm storing the other feltworks I still have in it.

Oh, I like that tote bag! I love the colours you've used, especially the olive -- it's a nice change from the very bright greens you see everywhere on Christmas stuff. Well done!

Thank you!

I had fallen in love with the idea of using the sandstone colored felt for the main bag, and Christmas Green and Christmas Red didn't seem like a good match. Neither did the often used Burgundy and Hunter... Somehow the olive made the most sense.

Heeeey, that's really spiffy! I really like that design! You know, I thought it was made of suede at first -- I bet it would sell like hotcakes as a purse/handbag ...

I'd really have to reinforce it in order to be anything more than decorative. Plus those leaves were a pain to cut out.
