Really? Syrian hamsters are the most common kind you can find in pet shops (they just happen to show up under a lot of different names: Teddy bear (longhaired syrian), Dalmatian (dominant spot Syrian), panda (black banded syrian) etc)... The color might not be that common but the species definitely is.

Hamsters can eat a lot of things... Dog-biscuits, crickets, meal-worms...

Nope. Most small rodents are in fact omnivorous. (With the exception of guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas...and probably others I can't think of right now)
Most of them may have seeds as their primary diet, but being desert animals hamsters won't pass up a bit of meat if they can get it. Usually it's bugs.
