I think I may have played Mortal Kombat once at a friends house a long time back, but nope, I don't recognize him. Sorry about that.

Fabulous darling! Tell me what the weight of your coldpress watercolor paper is? It looks so wonderfully crisp!
Love your use of gestural shading!

I use 140 weight. 90 pound would be way too light for me since it would warp so much more and I use a lot of water. Β I would love to try some 300 though. It is more expensive getting heaver paper, but depending on how you use it, it could be worth it. If you buy 90 pound paper you might need to stretch it every time so as to have a flat surface to work on. I occasionally stretch my 140 paper, especially if I am giving it a full background. Because I use a lot of water in my water/pigment ratio I prefer using cold pressed to hot pressed because of absorbency (I don't use rough because I like smoothness and detail), so you need to take that into consideration as well.
Thank you so much!

I totally understand! 140lb arches cold press is my weapon of choice! I did dabble in 300lb cold press, but I found that the fibers were so rich that it absorbed any vibrancy of the pigments, which is a bummer cause it was bliss to paint on initially. I've got a few watercolor pieces myself in my gallery. I love your style.Β

Ah, wow, that sounds like a bummer. I suppose that if I still want to test out that weight, I should get a nice, small size. Thanks for the info!
Aw, thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Just use professional grade pigments instead of student grade and avoid cold press in this exact instance and you might have better results. Its just thirsty paper is all =3. Student grade colors just won't cut it because of the fact that there is less pigment in the paint itself. Β Its still wonderful to use, and technically still the best... get arches don't change your brand, just understand it behaves waaaaay differently. Knowing what I didn't know then, you could still probably create beautiful vivid pieces with it. XDΒ

So heavier hot press would probably be very nice for me. Just much more expensive. xP I still have one giant block of cold pressed and part of another giant block to use, so I still have a lot to use.

I get it. I usually buy by the imperial sheet and divide into either halves or quarters depending on the size I need. It might be you can sample a sheet of Arches this way. If you've got a craft store nearby that uses those 40%-50% COUPONS, I'd do that as a single sheet can cost anywhere from 15-30 dollars depending on where you are and what store. Knocking half of that price down might be a little helpful, but definitely save it for a special project.Β
Anyway, didn't mean to ramble for so long, but I hope that helps if you are interested in trying 300lb.Β
Again, loved your style!Β
