Description
The eclipse is a disaster! I didn't test it because I don't know how it works, but it dissatisfied most users with the new schedule they made. Looking at the screenshots they provided and polls from other users, it's clear enough that it's a mistake. Most of the gadgets on the old site didn't exist. Everything is big, unorganized, chaotic, and cumbersome. It looks like an Internet version of Windows 10 that Microsoft launched on the market three years ago. There is no way I'm going to use a newer version of the site you provided for us. If you launch this, many professional illustrators will leave. The site will end in the same way YouTube ended five years ago. It's gross! It looks like an art station. Likewise, it's not friendly at all. Look at this screenshot to see how our galleries will look in the future. I wrote a suggestion, by the way. Please share this. (deviantart.zendesk.com/hc/en-u… ) Good luck!
Join our groups, DA-Revolution and Stop-Eclipse , to cease this madness. Here's a message dedicated to the administration: thumb767436852: Here's another one. It's related to the new copyright infringement rule.
THE NEW PLACE TO REACT:
Thank You for Your Feedback on Eclipse! Last week, we announced the Beta launch of DeviantArt Eclipse — a completely redesigned version of DeviantArt that puts more emphasis on artists and their art. As a Beta release, Eclipse is still under development and only available to a small portion of the DeviantArt community. We use the Beta release to gather feedback that allows us to closely analyze deviant engagement and sentiment. Over 4,000 deviants have already tried Eclipse and many have shared their invaluable and much-appreciated feedback. We’ve received nearly 1,700 individual Eclipse feedback reports — including 407 bug reports, 532 feature requests, and 748 pieces of general commentary. Our team has read through and triaged over 60% of these reports and has a goal of completing all of them in the coming week. Thank you to every deviant who has taken the time to share feedback. Whether you’re someone who provided a few words or several paragraphs of candid response, we appreciate the passion you have for

Dan Leveille explains the reasoning behind the removal of journal skins here:
Here is the direct link to his comment: (comments.deviantart.com/1/7726… )
His comment was posted in response to rotane 's Journal that discusses Eclipse:
re: EclipseNote: This journal is now many months old, and a lot of things i talk about here have since been fixed, or at least addressed. Not all of them, mind you; and the gist remains: Eclipse is vastly different from the current “Green Site” and introduces many changes, and not all of them for the better (in my opinion). Feel free to continue to share/mention this journal (you have my thanks!), or read Part II of my analysis.
Alright, where do i begin? After having used the Eclipse Beta for a while, i have collected a bunch of thoughts – and i have also submitted lots of them as feedback via the appropriate channels. Regardless, i Here's a forum thread related to this topic. (forum.deviantart.com/devart/ge… )

Plagiarism:
Original:
As you can see in screenshots provided by V0IDSPACER , the engineers of DeviantART Inc went low by stealing the design from a professional site art station.
Now let's get back to the point.
The icons look more blurry and have a dreadful image resolution. Same with the pictures.
The thumbnails of the pictures are too big.
Too much space.
Harder to navigate.
Slower to browse DeviantART Eclipse with Chrome.
Scroll down, no option to click from previous to next. (Endless scrolling wonderful.)
The header for the image should be sized down a bit.
The layout looks bland and boring.
No option to hide your activity or turn yourself visible or invisible.
No widgets.
Vote up a comment. What is this, Twitter? Nobody wants that. People will abuse this.
The layout looks awful and primitive.
No CSS Journal skins.
No custom boxes.
Inbox looks gross, and it looks like a poor clone of Microsoft Outlook Express.
Visible location. Do you have an idea of what cyberbullying is doing with user data? They misuse, steal their identity and use their data to perform unlawful actions that are illegal. Congratulations, I already see this site ending on the court, because of this dumb move. But, it's optional. It doesn't matter, it's still garbage, and it shouldn't be allowed.
We want a real "eclipse." Not a poor copy of Art Station and social sites, but I'll be honest, I prefer an old design because it's better and more friendly. As for Eclipse, move it to a mobile version, and everybody will be happy.
Widgets. They should stay where they are!
Make thumb codes for images, stamps, and pixel art available.
Make image HTML codes for GIFs available.
Make existing CSS coding for backgrounds for custom widgets available, as well as existing journal skins.
The ability to move the comment section wherever on the page rather than being stuck directly below.
The option to change your page to whatever theme and color you want is not limited to the widgets. The option to choose is better than black and white. For example, a space theme, a Halloween theme, a nature theme, and a cartoon theme
Allow animated icons for more frames than the usually limited frame that is available to function.
Better quality for both non-animated icons and animated icons.
Animated icons and non-animated into a bit bigger sizes.
Bring back the previous help desk platform. The old one was a landmark, and it was superior to the new one.
Expel the Protect Art team and Daniel, and return the old rules of reporting copyright infringement.
We also need the option to remove comments, and here is why: Spammers, death threats, chain emails, and trolling. I was spammed five years ago with death threats and nonsense gibberish comments, and hiding or flagging them is not enough; it makes the comment section look messy. Then again, removing comments would let abusive users remove their evidence for art thieves and harassers.
Something tells me this will not end well. I already see many members who will leave the site because of this stupid update. If you read our comments as you claim, then listen to our advice and forget about this nonsense. You will lose the reputation of millions of members who spent tens of years trying to build the site that we use today. You will exasperate volunteers, senior members, professional members, professional illustrators, and ordinary deviants because of this new update. I could count tons of them, but many people have done it better than me. Eclipse looks too complicated, primitive, and weird.
Whoever came up with the ever-so-genius idea of never-ending scrolling in someone's gallery gets no respect from me. Including this ridiculous eclipse!
I can understand when the administration wants to experiment with the new browsing technique, but this isn't what I meant. This never-ending scrolling jolts you so much; it's no wonder why people loathe that function so much. Yes, I am aware of the option that allows you to disable it, but when you visit someone's gallery in eclipse or incognito mode, it becomes aggravating to watch how hundreds of drawings are popping out each second. I prefer an old way of browsing someone's gallery by clicking the next page rather than cracking a wheel button on my mouse until I reach the bottom. Sometimes, when you try to “fix” something, you only end up making it worse.

I must agree, the lot of what they are doing is, at best, a very poor decision, usually not considering consequences whatsoever - including abuse of what they implement. As a general rule, if something can be abused, it WILL be abused, and I'm scared to think of what will become of this place with, for example, the facebook/twitterification and the huge emphasis that is put on statistics instead of the Artist's individuality and identity, as presented by themself. I keep rolling on that particular issue because it's one of the scariest things about "eclipse" to me (even if I find the UI to be a nightmare to navigate too), and yet I still see they ignore this issue COMPLETELY.
Your suggestions are fair.... however, being realistic, they are not going to undo what they have done. They take a pretty firm position that they are not going to drop their insane plan either, even if it doesn't make any sense from any sensible standpoint that I can think of. Your point about YT is valid as well.... and this is likely to end up in something like that. However, while to us this is a disaster, I am fearing even that would suit their plans because after all, this is not about the community or the spirit of DA. It's about making it into yet another faceless mass-consumption thing, and ultimately making more money. To them, DA being the sweet-spot niche between the obscenely mainstream and the utterly professional is just not good enough precisely because it was a NICHE. They want it to be mass. End of story. Those of us who don't want to fit in the mainstream but are not strictly professional and seek something in between, can just suck it big time, there's not so many of us anyway and from the standpoint of wix, they can do perfectly well without us.

I haven't personally used DA Eclipse but from what people are saying, videos I've watched about the subject, it's a giant mess. While a "dark mode" DA sounds really cool on paper, it is clearly not done well in reality. Taking away the personality of DA by making everyone's profiles this bland, generic, social media esque and uninspiring layout is big mistake. I love being able to personalize my page with stuff. It gives each artist's page personality and gives you an idea of what the artist is like.
My biggest problem with Eclipse is how the DA staff are shoving this trash heap of an update down our throats. I don't like it, unless it was redesigned to be made more functional, I don't want to use it. I probably will be one of the artists who leave when this Eclipse crap goes live permanently. I want to browse DA, not Twitter, not intsagram, or anything like it, DeviantArt. I also want to see people's amazing custom pages as well cuz it is cool.
Da Eclipse is a mistake. It needs to go.

Why Deviantart has become such a mess.I simply cannot call it any different. Deviantart is a mess! For many reasons, but I've always wondered why it went so wrong in any aspects. What went wrong? When? And how? I have never seen so many users on a site complaining or negative comments about it. Many users that have been here for years know that Deviantart has changed massively during this last period. It went wrong before already. To me, it started when Wix took over the company of Deviantart.
This bugs me for months already. But I've been holding in..As I see many others making journals and statements , I have to let my opinion be heard too! We users that have supported Deviantart over the years are THEIR backbone after all! Without us, they wouldn't exist in the first place!
Things have been bad for a pretty long time! That didn't happen suddenly.
Change doesn't always help, sometimes is backfires right back at you. With a new logo and such , they thought of a brand new fresh start. And I'm Santa Claus :>. This

My version of DeviantART EclipseThe moment I tested DeviantART Eclipse, I was dissapointed as a result.
My main reasons are presented in this journal.
For the past two days I've been trying to come up with an idea about how the site's layout update should be.
Suggestions regarding the Core members' benefits:
Core members should have the ability to customize their background image or colors.
The number of Custom boxes should be 20 instead of 10 for Core Members.
The site should promote the art of the people who pay more compared to how it's been promoted now.

"No option to hide your activity or turn yourself visible or invisible." > I'm not sure what you mean by the first one but if you mean who you just watched, commented on and stuff, they are optional widgets in the about tab. They might be working on the latest though.
"Scroll down, no option to click from previous to next." Danlev mentioned they were working on it. I can't find the comment since everything has been drowned out by other comments since...
"No widgets." They are called sections. They only appear if you hover the cursor on empty spaces if you want to add one, then you can choose what in particular (things like "posts" "donation pool" on the right, "deviation carousel" on the top, "watchers" "watching" "groups" "grid gallery" (that's the newest deviations widget) "group memberships" on the left). They are working on a featured deviation section like we have on classic
"No custom boxes." They are working on it > comments.deviantart.com/1/7735…
Keep in mind the old coding for custom boxes might not be compatible with Elipse's new code. We might get something like dragging and dropping without having to fiddle with code, like when we create a site on Wix, but that's only a supposition. I do hope we get something, even if it's not 100% like what we know
"Banning Daniel" Yes please... It should be a thing. As well as... the staff to stop telling us to block and contact them again if the abuse continues, when the same user has been reported more than once by the same user... There's a huge contradiction when they tell us to re-contact then when we do they say "re-contact if it goes on". Like... do something ... ? Count the number of reports I've sent already... ?
And well as for the rest, I hope you submitted feature requests in the forms. It's a Beta, or closer to an Alpha imo, it's far from being finished

I sent feedback a few weeks ago. I also sent feedback, and a complaint about the issue we have with the resolution and photo format. Now, most photos in PNG format are in JPEG format. I also noticed the site no longer hosts our illustrations on their service. Now, all of our illustrations are hosted at the Wix Service.

Apparently not, it would seem da would still benefit from some transparency regarding site bugs, rather than having to google-nav journal entries that only tell part of the story.

I might add as a sidenote that I am *slightly biased* towards the idea of Eclipse because I like this sort of sleek, minimalist revolution we're having in app interfaces at the moment, which has sort of been pioneered by the development of Windows 10 and the like. It sort of like the Brutalist age of U.I.

They're also trying to push art and creativity but this isn't even possible if they don't let people customise their page. If they want a more modern design why didn't they just make a design like mines that I posted? I'm not sure what their motives are with eclipse but they're gonna ruin the site and lose all their members, make no sales from core and honestly make the site less unique, turning it into just another mainstream site.

Lady-Rapphirica In reply to JustJoos [2018-11-18 22:40:25 +0000 UTC]
I reckon what they're trying to do to begin with is just establish a good base for the website, which they can then build upon as they and the userbase get used to the new layout. For all we know this new redesign might've been an almighty pain in the backside for these guys to code given some of the last major redesigns of this site are just over ten years old, so they probably just want to get familiar with the tricky stuff first, then eventually add in the custom stuff.
I think the pessimistic idea of DA "Losing all it's members" and "making no sales" is ambitious. It's one of the only decent art-based platforms out there, and despite the fact a lot of people are claiming they'll move to ArtStation if they have to, they won't, because ArtStation's appearance and interface is almost identical to how Deviantart will look after this update, they're better off staying anyway as not only will that make them a tremendous hypocrite, but they might also struggle to gain back the following and exposure they had on this site as ArtStation is a slightly more professional platform with a heavier emphasis on industry.
On the subject of Core, I imagine the core perks will change, there's likely a reason it hasn't been mentioned yet, and it's probably because it's going to solve all of these issues that the community are currently having with the interface.
Sorry for the essay, I completely understand everybody's concerns with this update, I just think everyone's blowing it a bit out of proportion as well.

That's the spirit! Besides if it does flop tremendously and they lose their entire userbase (which I do doubt, but we'll see) they could probably just revert the changes and everyone would come running back. That'd give them a second chance to perhaps implement changes more slowly.
