This is so beautifully done. The structure of Millie's head is excellent, and the shading is perfect. I feel as though I could just reach up to my computer screen and feel the soft velvet of her muzzle. Fantastic work!

*grin* Thanks so much for the comment. Excuse my huge tardiness in replying! I love your little profile pic by the way. One day I will draw your wonderful kitty. Do you think you'll ever get more kitties? I wish my mum would, it's been some years now since our lovely one passed, I miss her.

Such lovely pencil work.
Did you complete this commission using a photo reference, a live model, or simply your memory? All would be impressive, but I would be shocked if it were the latter. The confirmation of this horse's face is captured perfectly, without the natural tendency to roman-nose the horse, or make its mouth parrot-like. Furthermore, all of the wrinkles are in the right places for the pose. You show an excellent understanding of a horse's facial structure, which is a rarity with horse artists.
The shading and resulting contrasts are almost perfect. Do you tend to use the same one or two pencils and then layer them to get the darker shading, or do you switch to a heavier lead for the darker parts and use a wide range of pencils in your work? I am still trying to break away from the tendency of trying to complete the picture using the same, single pencil (simply altering the pencil pressure, or layering the lead), and would be interested in knowing how you achieve such a broad range of shades.
One of my favourite subjects, horses are. They were already made beautiful by nature, and the challenge is simply left in capturing that beauty.

Heh, I'm repeating myself in comments, but I'm so glad you like the shading, it was awfully tricky trying to get the contrasts right, I was quite worried about it for a while!

I'm so glad you think so, the shading on this was somewhat of a nightmare!
