The enormous creature begins to approach Loretta, who tucks her wings in and looks up at the giant esk with a broken expression and blood in her feathers. In blurring vision she sees monstrous horns of swirling pine and blades of grass for fur and it makes little noise as it carefully steps through the dry flora towards her, thrumming with a light steady pulse. Though large and unfamiliar to Loretta, the esk radiates a gentleness and caring energy.
